Top Three Holiday Photos

2014 & moving on from Tanzania to Malawi.

We entered Malawi at Mzuzu and then went on to Likoma Island near the E shore of Lake Malawi. Much closer to Mozambique, but nevertheless part of Malawi.

Mzuzu ATC guy's kids, those characters at intersections who wash windscreens... :p, kids are the same everywhere...

Was the height of summer late 2000s, but a very cool and windy day (seemed appropriate though). Stopped, shivering, halfway down the road on the bottom right at a 'cafe'. Two tables only, lady spoke no English. I said "soup". She brought me a massive bowl of pork and vegetable soup with a tonne of bread. Very nice and enough to sustain my walk back to the ferry and on to Kiel. Kind lady outright refused to take any money from me. Even when I tried dropping a 5 Euro note and walking away.

This thread has made me revisit my old trips and rekindled a lot of old memories. Most of which are just that - memories.
 
I like that this has morphed into more than one trip, and even more than three from that. I'm going to stick to three photos from each trip, however hard that will be. I've loaded all of our trip photos onto a single drive. One holiday - nearly 9000 photos and videos...

I'll start with our first holiday together, a month on the South Island of New Zealand with a just a few days in Wellington and a ferry ride to start. We flew Freedom. Another airline no longer with us.

Fishing in the Sounds and a double catch of Orange Roughy (roughie?). If I had to choose somewhere to spend the rest of my days it would be between boat accessible only in the Marlborough Sounds, or Rarotonga.

Next Maruia Springs. Most people know Hanmer Springs but it's super touristy and Maruia isn't, well at least wasn't. Proper Japanese bathhouse and outdoor springs. The second time we stayed it snowed overnight and the mountains around looked amazing as the sun hit them. This was November so a little warmer :)

It was either a crazy kea as it thought about attacking the rubber on the roof of our hire car, or this one, and this one won. We had a beautiful couple of days down in the Catlins, staying in a bach right on the beach of Porpoise Bay. Panier lambs :)

The next year we were going to Spain. Instead we ended up on a back to back cruise, Ice and Fire on Celebrity Infinity, an Alaska seven day cruise then 11 days across to and around Hawaii finishing with three nights at Waikiki. I'd already been on a cruise as a 15yo and loved it (TS Fedor Shalyapin) but this was the start of our love of unpacking once...

That Spain holiday still hasn't happened 16 years later.

This little bear stood sadly at the end of the pool of the ship. Maybe he was sad he was stuck forever just looking at the water?

We booked this through Flight Centre (before we knew better) and booked ship excursions (before we knew better)

One place we didn't was Juneau where we picked a whale watching tour off the dock. We saw whales, lots, orca and a couple of very late in the season humpbacks. It was a small boat compared to the giant cats that go out from Hervey Bay (as an example). Our cameras weren't as good as they are now!

Finally Hawaii. We snorkelled (ship's tour and one not), took a light plane (with friends we'd met onbaord) and hired a car from Hilo. But our favourite part of Hawaii was the sunset departure from each port

ok, already struggling with three. Celebrity sure know how to do a buffet. I chose to show the healthy one. It did include a volcano though :)

Interesting man hole cover in Obuse, Japan. If you look carefully you can make out the image, given there is a museum to this artist here as he travelled to the town when he was 83 at the invitation of a wealthy farmer, Takai Kozan and stayed for several years.
