Top Three Holiday Photos

This thread has sadly been neglected. Thought I’d add a few pics from a trip I just returned from to India. I will be returning hopefully some time next year. Had an absolute amazing time! A street photographers paradise.
Beautiful photos but I hope all the people in the shots were happy for their image to be recorded and shared.

In street photography, as far as I’m concerned if the people are in public then they’re fair game. The kids in the first pic were more than happy to have their pic taken. The kid in the second pic stopped me at banganga for a ‘selfy’ even though he didn’t have a phone so I took one with my phone and then one with my Sony camera. He put on the serious face for the camera. Where practical I always offer to show people the photo I’ve taken. I took nearly 1000 pics during this two week trip and many street portraits. Not once did anyone appear to be upset or object to their photo being taken. Surprisingly many people approached me to take a photo with me!

I'm glad you were able to take so many 'street portraits' without any issues but I do have a different opinion with regard to first world tourists taking photos wherever they travel.

Some years ago, during a trip to China, we took our then 5 year old blond son to the Great Wall and were almost mobbed by locals wanting to touch his hair and take photos with him. So much so that we had to leave early as he was getting quite distressed.

When I asked a local Chinese friend about this incident later, he turned the story around and said we took photos of local kids in the street and elsewhere without asking or without any regard of any social or cultural reasons why they may not want their photo taken.

I know many of us share ourselves on social media so our likeness is available widely but I'm much more circumspect and ask permission before assuming a person is happy to have their photo taken. Just my opinion as I'm not on social media.

I am thoughtful about soul stealing also, but ameliorate my guilt be taking shots a long way out where most will be unaware.
There are, of course, some wonderful examples of the social benefits of applied photgraphy.
A shipmate was mobbed as he snapped kids in the Solomons with his ipad and showed them the pictures

Thought I’d share a few more that I got around to editing. All done on an iPad Pro as I no longer own a desktop or laptop and find the iPad much easier to travel with. Planning the next trip to Thailand and maybe to Sri Lanka. Definitely plan on revisiting India possibly next year.

Sorting through hundreds of little yellow boxes retrieved from my storage locker, I feel a little like Forrest Gump and his box of chocolates as I randomly open boxes and scan only the best few from each box.

I had a stopover of a day or two in New York in March1985 so will share three "unique" views.

In those days, you could step out onto the outdoor rooftop of buildings. EDIT: The foreground building is the giveaway (the original World Trade Centre North Tower WTC1) and the view looks northwards along the Hudson River. Photographed from the South Tower (WTC2).

The Statue Of Liberty was being refurbished for her 100th birthday and was covered in scaffolding. Taken from Staten Island ferry with Manhattan skyline and the twin towers in the background (and fewer skyscrapers than today).

The torch had been removed and was on display on Liberty Island.

Same trip (March 1985) a couple of days earlier: Queen Mary at Long Beach.

Next door in a huge dome was Howard Hughes' "Spruce Goose". Again an unrepeatable shot as it was moved to Oregon in the 90s.

I'm pleased (and somewhat amazed) at the quality of the images of these almost 40 year-old slides. They were shot on Kodachrome-64 using a Nikon FE2 and 35-105mm zoom lens (hand held - I was a lot steadier in my youth!). The slides were scanned in a Nikon LS-5000 scanner. I don't remember thinking about archival issues back then but it's obvious Kodachrome stands up in the test of time.

As an aside, I remember running out of film whilst in South Africa in 1980. The only film in Kruger (?) was Agfa CT18. I'd used it a bit in Aus as it was cheaper than Kodachrome. Nice photos at the time, but to my dismay the slides have all faded to the point of being unreadable - but how was I to know that 40 years ago. Fortunately no longer a problem with digital cameras or camera phones (which have their own set of challenges - eg will you be able to find photos you took 30+ years ago on a phone you retired 10-15 generations ago?).

Great photos!!

Returned this week from a trip to Europe, the Middle East and India. This is my second trip to India in a year and I've already planned my third for next March. I will share a few pics from my most recent trip. Still going through the photos picking my favourites but I did get a new camera so a little trigger happy. Focus this time around was portraits with my favourite of the batch being the kid stood beside the bloodied coffin. He seemed oblivious to it though its the first thing I noticed with the smell and flies..
