Rockfords discussion

I am getting rid of my last from private school this year, and uni is way more expensive even with the kid putting the tuition fees onto HECS. So time to tighten the belt for another 4 years or however long it takes to graduate. So I better load up the 2021 Rockford order today before the college application fees are due next week.

Gary Walsh was a bit harsh with his 89 point review. Not going to stop me from buying it.

Rockford Basket Press Shiraz 2021
Posted on 18 October 2024.

A blend of grapes from many places around the Barossa - Eden Valley, Marananga, Ebenezer etc. - kind of like a Barolo classico in that way. Regardless, aside the acclimation, I reckon the straight Shiraz is often not the best wine in the Rockford portfolio of reds, at least these days. It's a wine that feels different to the others in the way it's vinified.

Black fruit, iodine, pencil shavings, beef pan juices, liquorice and spice. It's medium to full-bodied, dark and quite saline, plenty of chewy tannin, a blood orange tang to acidity, toasted nuts, with a ferrous edge on a finish of decent length. There's something of a desiccated character to this wine, though it does have impact, albeit not a great deal of charm. The acidity feels a bit unsettled to me, a lemony zing to close, and maybe that's OK for others, just noted all the same. Not a soft Rockford style, more angular and hard.

I find it intriguing that Rockford's Basket Press Shiraz is being offered on Vinomofo. Given Rockford's traditional distribution methods, this move is quite unexpected. I wonder if this indicates a shift in their sales strategy or perhaps an effort to reach a broader audience. It will be interesting to see how this development affects the brand's perception among loyal customers.

What's being offered? Quick search didn't turn up anything.

Perhaps from the secondary market?

I sent Rockford an email inquiring about how to purchase their wines in general just for giggles and received the generic response I expected.
I'm in Sydney and unlikely to visit Rockford cellar door in person.

It's way too much effort for me to play the Rockford mailing list game. I never bothered.
Maybe I'm jealous, maybe its sour grapes? (Pun intended)
I'm on plenty of other mailing lists and I just don't need the undignified humiliation of begging to buy a $90 bottle of BP while buying the other stuff they can't sell. It doesn't make sense to me.
I'm happy for Rockford's success, but in recent years there are many as good and better Barossa shiraz imo.
e.g. I have recently loaded up on all four of the 2022 Standish releases at $125 a pop and I'm more than happy.

I'm not on the many other mailing lists you have worked your way onto, but don't complain about it on an internet forum :p There's plenty of places to buy Rockford from at a slight markup if you don't want to play their mailing list game, just like there's places I could buy some of the stuff you have access to, I expect.

I've been to bottle shops in Sydney and know of a VIC-based retailer that you can buy Rockford from online and have done so myself previously.

True,
I'll get to it one day :)

I don't think that's quite accurate though. They sell out of a bunch of their wines that you can buy online. As for undignified humiliation and begging...I don't think so.
