Keen to understand from folks in the know why Qantas don't do a wine or beer service for the dinner (2nd meal service) on QF87?

The service commenced 2 hours prior to landing (around 8pm) and crew were only offering "Juice, water, soda, tea or coffee". The explanation from crew was "It would take too long to serve alcohol given they also need to time to clear trays"

Ironically crew were going back and forth to the galley to get more milk, napkins, tea refills, etc.

Is this common for the longer Asian flights or mismanagement by the cabin manager on my flight last week. Felt very much like nickel and dining customers.

Sounds like lazy crew.

Alcohol isn’t offered on breakfast services (ie into SYD from the US) but they’ll serve it if asked.

It's somewhat normal for airlines not to proactively offer alcohol with the second meal service prior to landing, but (assuming it's normally a free part of the on-board service) it's usually at least given on request.

Did you specifically ask for alcohol with the dinner service and were declined, or was it just not proactively offered?

Asked and was told they didn't load the beer or wine into the carts as the alcohol service takes much longer and they wouldn't have enough time to serve everyone

I see. That seems like a plausible excuse, but I'm surprised the crew were also unwilling to walk back to the galley and get a beer or wine for you when you specifically asked.

I’ve certainly had alcohol during the second meal service on this flight. I remember making a particular note to do so because it’s a rare double “dinner” (not breakfast) flight (compared to the usual breakfast/ dinner that most flights end up doing).

Side note, it’s going to be a shame when this route is handed over to jetstar.
