What Does The Noob Status Matched QFF Need to Look Out For?

I never thought I would..but I have. I have asked for a status match. I know nothing about booking flights and collecting SC's and points with VA/DJ.

My first faux pas was to assume that taking flights from MEL-NTL via BNE would earn me extra SC's compared to taking the direct route. Apparently it doesn't work like that.

I'm hoping that there will be quite a few FF's here who fly both QF and DJ/VA and might be able to point me in the right direction. what else do I need to keep my eyes open for?

Some differences to keep in mind, coming from Qantas


Zone tables

In Qantas, the zone tables for earning SC's, and using points for upgrades, and using points are consistant.

In Velocity Frequent Flyer there are variations depending on what you are doing:


Status Credits
1. 0-750
2. 751 - 1500
3. 1501 - 3000
4. 3001 - 5000
5. 5001 - 8000
6. 8000 +

Flight Upgrades
1. 0 - 600
2. 601 - 1200
3. 1201 - 2400
4. 2401 - 3600
5. 3601 - 4800
6. 4800 - 5800


2) Earning Points on Virgin Australia domestic is based on dollar spend, which may be better or worse than the Qantas earn

3) There is no minimum earn on Velocity

4) There is no life time status on Velocity

Until check in. Which opens approximately 24 hours before departure. Front few rows in Y are reserved for Gold/ Plat FF'ers and (as a general rule) front half of the aircraft has slightly more leg room.

And to be fair since getting gold of the 5 flights I have taken I've taken I've been offered exit row on 4!

Yes, i am offered exit rows pretty regularly too. I prefer up the front though - i'm not tall enough to have leg issues, i prefer to stow my bag under the seat in front, and i'm the guy who jumps up as soon as the seat bely light goes up, grabs my stuff and manoeuvres to be first off the plane.

Its rumored that seat selection will be available in November. Already they have introduced what aircraft will be operating what flight when you book, and in "my prefrences" they have asked your prefered seat. Lets hope for the best!

If it is upgrades using points you are looking for, then watch out for differences in the implementation.

1) You have to ring
2) Doesn't appear to be an ODU option (has to be more than 24 hours out)

I thought it has to be LESS than 24 hours out? In any case though, it's not an ideal system and i suspect it's to do with the quality of their IT backend rather than because they want it to work like that. I suspect the IT changes will be implemented eventually to improve it but no idea when.

Hmm - I interpret it as more than 24 hours! I could be reading it wrong!

Upon first verifying that a premium redemption seat is available online, members may call to request an upgrade at anytime up to 24 hours prior to scheduled departure time. Upgrades will not be accepted any less than 24 hours prior to travel.

It is easy to misinterpret.

I did a double take until I scanned the text immediatly after:

"Upgrades will not be accepted any less than 24 hours prior to travel. "

So, really it could not mean "within 24 hours"; still poorly written however.

I assume They provide a refund on The Lounge membership. I assume it is pro-rata.
