Just wanting to clarify interpretation of luggage allowances. Note the email that came today updating luggage allowances for Gold QFFers (not making a huge difference in this case).

Myself, mrsdoc and minidoc are travelling BNE-NAN-SYD-MEL on FJ metal but all booked as QF flight number (via QF website).

Flying J, both mrsdoc and I are Gold FF.

QF allowance suggests:

doc: 2 bags @ up to 32kg ea
mrsdoc: 2x32kg
minidoc: no checked allowance but 3 infant pieces (eg. portacot, stroller and child seat)

FJ allowance suggests

doc: 30kg (J allowance)
mrsdoc 30kg (J allowance)
minidoc: 10kg + stroller

What do we follow?
Should we anticipate issues at checkin either in BNE or NAN?

We want to take 3 checked bags (unsure weight but will lay money mrsdocs will be near 30kg, mine will be about half that, one with assorted stuff for minidoc, weight tba but packed by mrsdoc so not light) + portacot (5.5kg) + stroller.

FWIW we'll be in MEL afterwards so "it's a beach why do you need so much luggage" wont be especially helpful.

TIA.

Wow, slow response for AFF.

Guess all the SC runners did carryon only.....

As FJ is the most significant carrier, you get the FJ allowance (if it is on the one booking). QF code on QF metal get the FQTV allowance, QF codes on other carriers get the 'normal' allowance.

Edit: Assuming the SYD-MEL is a connection from the NAN-SYD flight?

Always operating carrier rules applly

Not necessarility trhe case since April 1.

See the link in post #4.

Very true, sorry.

However now I am confused again :D ... the way I see it here is, the operating carrier is the MSC and the fact that it has a QF flight number has no impact on the baggage allowance.

Glad it's not just me that's confused.

Anyone else got any ideas?

Safe option will be to keep it to <70kg + stoller I guess.

Let's hope it's not more than that!

NAN-SYD-MEL connected.

A bit misleading if this is the case as I booked it via QF purely for the luggage allowance.

Looks like I should have booked via FJ.

In this case theInsider is correct.

(Not relevant in this particular case, but for USA origins/destination, the baggage allowance of Marketing carrier (not operating) for the MSC of the first journey applies for the entire booking.)

I just got back from NAN tonight. Technically the FJ allowances apply, however the ground staff in NAN don't seem to be very picky with excess luggage (being in J probably helps). I wouldn't count on it, but if you go over the 30KG each allowance by a little, I'd say you're safe. I checked 40kg per pax this morning without so much as a second glance (the check in lady didn't even total the weights of the four bags - or she was keeping check mentally).

Thanks danielribo, we'll work towards the DJ allowance and hope not to go over by much!

Thanks all.

My QF booked J-class NAN-SYD-MEL flights the other day showed a 32kg allowance for both flights in the 'Your Bookings' section of qantas.com.au

I think the notes on the "My Booking" page are incorrect (ie: the system doesn't notice that it's not a QF operated flight). My NAN-HNL-NAN sectors on the QF Code/FJ Flight showed the standard Qantas USA baggage allowance of "2 Pieces" instead of 30 Kg as per the FJ rules to HNL.

Might be true, but here is the eticket:

Anyway, 32kg (or even a bit more) is probably going to be OK in J-class. :)
