Alec Baldwin booted off AA flight.

As much as I hate the PED rules they apply to every pax on board not just the ones who are not celebs.

He's the older one isn't he??? Dunno him, but something has always struck me about him as being a bit of a tosser???

Yes the one who swore at his 14 year old daughter.
An absolute idiot.

Another case of DYKWIA

No one finds it strange that other F pax had their phones on as well because they were tweeting about the incident?

I honestly dont know why the airlines bother any more - no-one turns them off anyway. The number in the overhead compartments alone that go off when you land is enough to tell you that.

I wondered about that myself! If they could tweet about as it happened/just after it happened then the rules weren't being enforced equally. Perhaps a case of being more harsh with the celeb as it was perceived he was being a DWKWIA when in fact others were also doing the same.

Of course, two (or several) wrongs don't make a right but singling one person out isn't right either!

Cheers

Beside the fact that he's a tosser?

I know. What's wrong with these people? Don't they know how to put their phone on silent?

Just turn the phone off......tool.

Have you noticed how many TR have photos of takeoff/landing.....

.

It's not so much the silent/not silent, if you want phones off (for safety), enforce it off. Otherwise dont hassle everyone and enforce it only sporadically.

Are you calling me a tool? :?: (perhaps Baldwin) Ignoring that I forgot a smiley on my post, see below. If so, I can only say I didn't say I leave my phone on.

BTW I'm pretty sure we're allowed to use cameras (real cameras not phone cameras) during take off and landing now.

sorry I forgot to add a  I was trying to be funny by alluding to the fact that if it was on silent then the overhead wouldn't beep and we'd be none the wiser. Sort of like if a tree falls in the forest does it make a sound, in reverse. If a phone doesn't beep was it really on?

If you look at the A380 safety card it specifically allows the use of digital cameras during take off/landing. This does put an interesting thought out there about the difference between a phone in flight mode and a digital camera.

Well there are so many possible reasons for this phones off policy, both technical and bureaucratic, my suspicion is that it's because once upon a time (before mobile phones existed) there were (in very specific circumstances) sound electromagnetic interference concerns and these have over time morphed into 'the aircraft could very well crash if we have any electronic (especially radiating) devices on'. It is gradually being relaxed (i.e cameras being allowed as quoted in above post) and I understand the introduction of the 787 will allow further generalised use of electronic devices, perhaps during takeoff and landing.

What strikes me more oddly than the fact that he rudely refused to turn off his phone* was that he kept it on just to play Words With Friends? That, if it is the reason, is ridiculous and certainly makes him a tool.

* The article states it so, but it is not clear if he was given a warning to turn it off (apart from the regular message imparted during the normal scripted PAs) or was simply read the riot act without warning and marched off.

To say that Baldwin will never fly AA again isn't a big deal for me - if he is going to act like a tosser as demonstrated as such, then if and when I do fly AA I'm glad to know there will potentially be one less tosser on board.

medhead - how could you even think that!

Comment was fair & square directed at Mr Baldwin for engaging in a dispute with the FA. No problem with him pushing the limit a little but once formally requested to turn off - his refusal crossed the line & he became a tool.

Well, I've learnt something new today:)

Income jealousy on the part of the FA?

Just throwing that out there as a possible other side to the story.

I would suggest its simply an off beat promotion for Words With Friends....

I practically always take some video or photos when taking off and/or landing... Apart from wanting a little record of where i have been, if nothing else, if we all crash and die it will give the investigators a bit more to work with... :) But anyway, on a few planes i have been told to turn it off, but it seems so patently obvious it does nothing, and on so many airlines i have been allowed to, that i ignore this one from the odd FA who seems to want to be a bossy boots... Plus i imagine a cameras 'transmitting' capacity as opposed to a phone would be fairly minute...

My phone i do turn off coz i try to sort of follow rules if it does me practically no harm at all and i have survived all my 38 years without needing to make a phone call in flight, so i can survive a few more i think... They may want you to turn them off for all sorts of reasons, including maybe the somewhat extortinate rates they charge for phone calls using the phone in the seat don't they??? But yes, I'm sure it goes back to airplane safety or at least navigation issues, even though technology has probably passed this issue by...

As for the people tweeting, if he got kicked off, they were probably tweeting this either while it was happening or while taxiing out towards take off which is usually pretty safe i would think, if they were still tweeting once they were lined up after seeing the example of AB a few heads should have been banged together...
