Thanks to info given by Serfty I discovered QF check in at LAX opened at 2PM. In Syd I have only managed 3 hours before. Is there a link somewhere to a post on AFF talking about check in times at various airports? Thanks

I'm unaware of such a thread, but this part of the QF site gives check in opening hours for each airport (at least the few I checked) under the 'Departures' tab for each location. I don't know that this necessarily means that if check in is open say from 0800 - till 2000, that you can check in at 0800 for say a 1700 departure. You may need to read it in conjunction with QF's general check in times here. Though DFW for example says check in open 6PM till 9PM so that one is fairly self-explanatory with no room for misunderstanding.

I have heard that SATS in Singapore, who does ground handling for a bunch of airlines, including QF, is able to check you in many hours before your flight (for premium pax only I think - J/F/airline status) so there are exceptions out there.

I have checked in at AKL at the QF premium check in at least 5 hours before my flight.

How many hours you can check in before a flight certainly varies. Last year in LHR Term 3 I was able to check in 5 hours before my QF flight (this was at the premium desk). As i have just gained WP it is of interest as i would like to maximise my time in the premium lounge!!

I think the second part is right - as I was asking about in the other thread, despite being 'Open from 3.30am to midnight' on the first page, MEL check in is closed during the early evening between QF133 and QF29, and that's in a QF home port. Bit of a shame, but them's the breaks.

Think i will just have to ask here when next i travel "how early have you checked in at XYZ?" Probably plenty of experienced flyer will be able to answer!

Hong Kong and Singapore are the stand-out airports. Plenty of early check-in options (and SIN is not just restricted to premium flyers either).

Without bags, sometimes you can get lucky with early Intl check-ins. Of course, check-in staff do have to be around or a friendly staffer know how to open up the flight and get you a BP.

Yes it is variable, we previously arrived early at Frankfurt only to be told "check in doesn't open until the LAN flight departs" - which was 3 hours before the QF departure, AND such a boring wait it was !!!
