I will be in a potential situation soon that will make life somewhat difficult for me. I will be needing to send off my passport to get a visa (of sorts) in it however there's no "set timeframe" of how long it will take before you get your passport back. The issue is I'm currently working in multiple countries and require the passport to do said work. Are there any options like getting a secondary passport to cater for situations like this?

I know some countries do but you need a reason for having them for example certain countries stamps in your passport would prevent you from entering other countries (Israel and Iran for example).

https://www.passports.gov.au/Web/FAQ.aspx hasn't come up with anything useful for me.

Legally they can (From the Australian Passports Determination 2005)

Concurrent passports

For subsection 17 (2) of the Australian Passports Act, the Minister may issue an Australian passport to a person in any of the following circumstances:

(a) the person needs a second passport to avoid significant delays in travel that would otherwise be caused by waiting for a visa to be issued;

(b) the person intends to travel to a country that will not accept a travel document showing evidence of travel to another country, and the person’s current Australian passport shows evidence of travel to that other country;

(c) the Minister is satisfied that other exceptional circumstances exist.

I suggest making some calls....

Thanks. Was thinking of contacting the embassy over here tomorrow, will be handy to cite that reference.

My old boss' boss ended up with three UK passports for this exact reason. I might have to do the same if I start doing more work in China due to Saudi/China issues.

Without meaning to do a mysterious DYKWIA, if, after applying you run into trouble with the application, I may be able to assist you in having it addressed 'higher up the chain'. Just PM me if that's the case. Happy to try and help if I can and the need be.

As per PM, thanks.

Having a look on the Consulate website in the UK I found something interesting:

Q11 - The Home Office or DVLA has my Australian passport and I need to travel; what can I do?
We are unable to contact the Home Office, DVLA or any other authority on your behalf in order to expedite the return of your passport. You will need to liaise directly with the relevant authority concerning the return of your passport as we are unable to issue a further travel document to you.

Whilst your passport is with the Home Office, DVLA or other authority, if you book travel outside the UK, you should be aware that there is no facility for you to be issued with a concurrent Australian passport or temporary travel document.

On those occasions where you may need to travel urgently for compassionate reasons, e.g. serious illness or death of a family member or friend, and you require your passport back from the Home Office/DVLA etc., you will need to liaise directly with the relevant authority. Please be aware that your passport may not be released to you unless you provide written advice to say you wish to withdraw your visa/driving licence application and you may also forfeit the application fee.

If you report to us that your Australian passport has been lost at or by the Home Office/DVLA etc, before we accept a passport application from you, you will be required to obtain a letter from the relevant authority confirming the loss of the passport.

Of note is that it says "if the HO has your passport" (which would be the case here) however I think this implies if they already have it and you're then trying to get a 2nd passport it can't be done. I'd be looking to get it BEFORE sending off my Visa request to the HO. I've e-mailed the Consular Services in London stating the scenario and will see what they come back with.

Contact made, just waiting on a response.... sigh. Such bad timing for this time of job, but was one that I could not turn down!

Just received an e-mail back from the consulate in the UK, however there is one portion on it that worries me:
Please note that if your passport is temporarily unavailable because it’s being held by the U.K. Border Agency for the processing of a visa/permit, we are unable to issue a further travel document to you as this reason does not meet the requirements for being issued with a concurrent passport.

I'm currently doing regular travel to 2 countries outside of the UK, which I need it for (and the travel can't be deferred) and the permit I require would be issued by the UK Home Office. So, it means they don't currently hold it, but they will when I send it in. Based on the above it seems like it would be a straight out no......

Whilst I have never had to use it, I have a second passport (British) in addition to my NZ one. It occurs to me that many of us are in a position nowadays to have dual nationality. Not sure if this works in practical terms though. And maybe not in your situation.

I have no dual citizenship option.

Oh well. Isn't always the way, someone who needs it can't get it and then someone like me has options falling out of his......

The way I read that is the HO holding your passport is not a valid reason to get a 2nd travel document. So not a straight out no, if you have a valid reason. I think that those were listed already. So does one of those valid reasons apply to your situation?
