Can airline food be tasty?

It is a mid-afternoon flight, but 3h35m. I'll be sure to let you know if I agree!

Should definitely be a full meal. Just expect an experience that fits with the country- more "Danny's diner" than French Gourmet restaurant :p

Flew in the pointy end on AA last Sept POP-MIA-LAX and was really surprised at quality of food - very impressed.

My girlfriend loves her scallops ... and she thinks the best ever scallop she has ever eaten was on board a plane [AA LHR-LAX J]. I was also impressed as to the size, quantity, texture and taste.

I read the NYT piece and felt it made the problem pretty clear, but as others have noted, it was short on assurances that the chefs involved had experimented with flavours in the air.

Personally, as a SPML consumer, I'm tending to Simongr's approach of eating before flights where possible. In QF whY there is only so much Coriander chicken / lamb chermoula and white fish with tomato sauce I can take. I can't comment on VA much, but thought the Flexi meals were OK (but no more).

SQ are excellent at catering IMO, especially for SPML in J.

From that article: '“Ice cream is about the only thing I can think of that tastes good on a plane,” says Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University.'

I agree SQ meals are excellent. Some too spicy though for my special meals.

Personally, if I get op to eat in the lounges, my meals (and alcohol consumption) on airplane are minimal. Love the Guinness on SQ but ask FA's to chill it first.

The Qantas meat balls in economy were very tasty a couple of years ago. Have not seen that meal onboard for a long time.

Yeah I had something recently that was a real standout, I think it may have been the rissoles, had some shockers also though. Definitely not the worst I've had but the one that stays in my mind are the choc caramel sea salt things that QF give out in they're refreshment packs on the way back over from DFW

Standout was on QF which was rissoles and veg and mash. That was an ADL-MEL leg.

I would agree that this was/is an excellent Y meal.

Would say that I have enjoyed all my J & F meals.

As for Y meals in QF, I have never had a bad meal. Sure, I've had some average meals but nothing bad/inedible.

After flying through the USA, I said that I would never complain about another QF Y meal ever again.

Definitely possible, even in my cabin of compulsion, Y. I personally am quite pleased when the airline offers a meal reflective of their national cuisine. My last international flight from ICN to SYD on OZ served bulgogi ssambap (a make it yourself dish where you have beef, rice and bean paste wrapped up in a lettuce leaf) which was rather nice.

Best meal for me was a tie between a halal version of a fried breakfast I had on EK on a MEL-AKL flight last year and an Irish breakfast I had on EI on a CDG-DUB flight back in 1996 (i.e. before they started heading down the Ryanair route). Why on earth do supposedly full service airlines still serve those styrofoam omelettes for breakfast (I'm looming very sternly in your general direction, LH!).

What ever happened to those meatballs and mash in QF economy? Very nice....

I had my first taste of the SYD F lounge this week and was blown away by the a la carte menu and the meal I ordered. Of course then I was into a 737 to WLG and unfortunately took a second breakfast on board at it was a fair way into the flight (it should have been lunch anyway with the time change). Well it was gawd awful. Disgusting potato cake thingy, rubber fried egg (worst I've seen) a snag (edible) and baked beans (say no more). This with a sticky muffin-like object.

I really wish I hadn't had anything.

Usually however I find it's not too bad, the odd dull tasteless meal but most are okay in QF Y. Much better than the nothing in DJ anyway.

Saw the Heston Blumenthal show - it was very interesting. I wonder if it's been taken "on board" anywhere. It was done with BA so they may have done it for F/J.

I agree. That was probably the best QF domestic Y meal that I have had. Definately my favourite domestic Y meal.

Believe that they were called rissole some-thing-or-others.

Yep, agreed- definitely their best Why meal domestic! They were called Rissoles but I haven't seen them in ages! :(

A number of the asia based carriers have reasonable Y meals, more so the asian rather than the western option.

Asiana were serving a quite nice BeBim Bap for a while, but I haven't flown with them recently to know what their current Y meals are like.
