Biggest Travel Highlight/s?

Having our journey through Austria delayed in Tyrol due avalanches. And being the one doing all the organizing I was a tiny bit distressed.

Then ending up in perhaps one of the most coziest chalets all the way up in the mountains, with possibly the best view anyone could ask for. Lovely old couple running the place, and their very limited English and delicious food and hospitality was amazing. Fresh snow nonstop for two days so really had the opportunity to slow down a fast paced trip (see as much of Europe as possible, whilst consuming copious amounts of alcohol!) and relax in a ridiculously serene environment with homemade gluhwein (nomnomnom, non of that rubbish bulk made stuff), and the company of some of your best mates.The days spend wandering around in the forests covered in soft snow and getting lost off the beaten track and finding all kinds of things ... unforgettable, even made wet socks for the whole day bearable.

I've found in all my travels, sometimes an unplanned and unexpected adventure, getting out of the big cities, exploring non touristy areas, and taking the paths traveled by, is really the best fun one will ever find.

My most recent highlight was spending a day cruising through Fiordland in New Zealand (Milford, Doubtful and Dusky Sounds) last December. It was absolutely spectacular - and there wasn't a cloud in the sky which is quite lucky given the area receives a lot of rain.

I was on Radiance of the Seas. That particular ship has pod thrusters that can be rotated in any direction - and as a result the Captain was able to manoeuvre the ship so that the bow was at the base of a massive waterfall (the people standing at the front were getting wet).

My favourite highlight was in 2010 when I took my Mum on her first overseas flight (I took her on her first overseas trip in 2009 which was a cruise). We were boarding the aircraft (747-400) and I think she was expecting cramped economy with some of the screaming children we walked past on our way to the priority boarding lane. That was not to be and I'll never forget the look on her face when she sat down in 1K and was handed a glass of champagne.

That of course was immediately after her first ever business class flight - she flew from BNE-SYD to meet me at which point we had a leisurely lunch in the First lounge :)

First to mind:

Sitting in 1A on an AAircraft coming to the approach at the end of an HNL-LAX red-eye - we cruised slow and low flying West between LAX and Los Angeles. It was pre-sunrise and there was a blanket of fog around. The taller buildings were sticking up light and colourful out out of the fog which itself was glowing in multiple colours from the lights of the streets and buildings illuminating it

It was surreal.

Yes agree, for us it was fog in LAX and then we suddenly see the HOLLYWOOD sign out of nowhere.

Never forget in cruise seeing another aircraft flash by at a 1000 ft boxed separation, surreal and so quick a closing speed of 1800 kms. Over the congested southern vitnamese coast........

Is that priced in Indian rupees or USD.. ? Sometimes that is a good measure/benchmark of a destination/&/or travel experience! Hopefully a contrasting favorable rate to the SIN Marriott beer prices.. :evil:

I can't remember the exact rate in Rupees, but it ended up at about $20USD.

Considering the week we were confined to the hotel due to uprest in other parts of India, it was worth it.

Meeting my (now-ex) partner on a flight... not sure if that's a highlight or regret? :shock::lol:

And then there are some crazy weekends that I've had, such as doing my uni masters exam on a Sat morning, then flew out to TPE, spent most of the night in a bar, then had a lunch date in HKG on the next day, and back to SIN for work on Mon morning. All flown in J, of course.

Well I have done some wonderful trips recently including CX and QF long haul F, but today I flew to MEL to spend a few hours with my mother. I didn't tell her I was coming (but did check with my siblings where she would be). The look on her face was priceless and it was a very happy Mother's Day.

Nice one Hvr....

5 not in order

1. Following Adam Scott and Jason Day around Augusta National during their Sunday charges 13 months ago;
2. Seeing my then 3 year old smile when meeting her fave princess (Cinderella) for the 1st time at HKG Disneyland hotel;
3. Having a 'local' wild water Buffalo (very accustomed to humans) play a trick on us by hiding under a bridge and snorting as we walked over it in a small town called Pui O (20min drive outside of Tung Chung). Scared the bejesus out of my wife.
4. Helo ride over Niagra Falls;
5. On a return trip to HKG Disneyland being made Grand Marshalls of the daily parade on our daughter's 5th birthday.
