why would they bump 27 people up a class if there was still seats in their original cabin? they'd have enough to deal with offloading 27 pax!

Because they can? Also, it's only a scenario, anyway.

27 pax times an average ticket price of say, 10K return is almost half the cost of a charter. More if the tickets are a higher cost base...

I've always wondered what i'd do in a tech situation like Spanair 5022:

Spanair reported that the pilot had previously attempted and aborted a departure due to a sensor reporting excessive temperature in an air intake, and that the temperature sensor was de-activated on the ground (reportedly an established procedure since that sensor is redundant), delaying departure by over an hour. Another takeoff was attempted, during which the fatal accident occurred.

I've been overplaying this situation in my mind and I ask myself if I would be that person that would demand to get off the plane after the first attempt. It's a tough call!

That is an interesting one, as the tech problem itself was not the cause of the accident it would seem.

I had to rattle my memory.. Yes I have physically done this before.. Some 20 years ago on a domestic flight in Mexico, an old DC9 aircraft with an open door coughpit & frogs hopping around the cabin.. After a turbulent flight down over the Andes on route to MEX we had a stopover in some outpost town. I really wanted to get off the flight, as I valued my life.. As I walked off, & asked that I wanted my luggage.. No way Jose was the reply! Its tagged to next destination! I then asked how long is the coach/bus ride to MEX? 16 hours.. No luggage.. 16 hour open bus.. So I flipped a coin.. Dare I do it! Back on the trusty old DC9 for another 45mins.. Sat down the back sucking on Coronas praying even to the Inca gods..

and with all due respect BR, i think you're being precious .. with the amount of flying you do i can't imagine how you could care about superstition because in my opinion that's all it is

I understand that my fear is irrational.... It is very real though. I am a VERY nervous passenger.

I would HATE to get to the gate and see NBW. I do not like to make a fuss and with so many friends and family members with me, this would be awful.

No.....

I also stopped flying on EK's A340-500 once it was reported that they were going to repair the aircraft after the tail-strike in MEL.

As I posted above.... I DO have a very big fear of flying. Even after all the flights I have done. I am actually never comfortable on an aircraft. I am VERY envious of those who are.

I would most definitely voluntarily de-board in any cabin if there has been an aircraft substitution.

e.g flying SYD-HKG and vv in September and January on an A380 in economy. If that was somehow switched to a 767 and to a lesser extent an A330 I would get off. I am not sitting in any seat on a QF 767 for 9+ hours.

Contrary to what some people may or may not believe I pay for a seat on a specific aircraft not just to get from A to B.

How do you know which rego of aircraft QF plan to use on upcoming QFi flights? I mean the company have that info but can the public freely access it?

Mmmmmm.... I DO wonder what I will do if NBW is the aircraft we are all flying to LHR for the Olympics. There are 14 of us... I certainly won't be getting on the plane!!

There are some plane spotters who watch the maintenance schedule and know routes backwards who could give you an educated guess. But at the end of the day, it is never 100% reliable. Also any aircraft on any airline could be substituted at the last minute.

I am far less superstitious, which probably suits my current career choice as there are times where I must fly (within reason) regardless of personal preference for aircraft types.

I find other passengers a much greater source of stress than aircraft types. There have been times when I wanted to be re-seated or off-loaded due to other passengers (especially in whY).

I guess this is why I do not use my points. I pay for an F airfare and if I got to the gate and saw NBW, I would not board. In this particular instance, I will not have any luggage checked in, so there would be zero disruption to other pax. I really do try not to make a fuss about this type of thing. I have tried EVERYTHING to get over my fear.... I just can't seem to do it. I AM a lot better now, than I was several years ago.

I was sat in the F lounge a few weeks ago looking at my gate and was actually pleased to see NBW - in fact posted that same comment to FB:

Wouldn't it be better then not to know? Are you building yourself up for the risk whereas if you didnt think about it (hard to do I guess) and didn't look for the aircraft rego then you wouldn't have to consider de-boarding.

The 16hr open bus ride would probably be far more dangerous so you made the right call.

We boarded in ZIH headed to MEX - after being told "flight oversold" we waited, at the last minute were handed 2 BPs and boarded with the door promptly slammed behind us! Despite the ~12 people waiting with us who were not allowed to board, there were quite a few seats left on the aircraft. I suspect in hindsight the landing weight due to temp/altitude was at/over it's maximum for MEX but the ground crew "did us a favour" and got us on the flight.

To me, I would prefer to know. As I keep saying.... I KNOW my fear is irrational. I do everything I can to try and minimise my risks. For example, I NEVER fly commercial within the USA. I could save a fortune by purchasing F airfares.

It has been "luck" that I have avoided OJH. There is no way I would know prior to arriving at the airport.

I have read all the posts about NBW being "better than new" and the most inspected A380 etc... I still won't ever fly on her again.

Totally your call BR - I have no fear of flying but try and get me to stand on a desk without checking structural integrity, having multiple hand holds and potential falling on to hazards removed from the potential fall areas...

My suggestion to make life easier for you would be to call QF the day before to check and get moved onto a different A/C rather than it being a trauma at the airport. If I was travelling with you I would prefer for you not to be in the position of seeing your look of horror as you see the wrong a/c at the gate.

I see vastly more accidents on air crash investigations that are about stupid one off mistakes rather than previous incidents or aircraft age. For example, yesterday they have a plane that crashed because someone removed half the screws holding on a leading edge and didn't really bother to tell anyone. Stupid technical mistake that could have happened to any aircraft and it caused a crash. Then there are the pitot tubes that have been taped up but not untaped. I am vastly more concerned about stupid technical mistakes and oversights that I am about which aircraft I'm on or the age of the aircraft.
