Hey Guys,

Just trying to pick your brains on a cheap, very very cheap hotel <$100 per night inclusive of taxes for NYC. It has to be Manhattan Island and any location south of Central Park, preferably close to subway [A/C/E] that connects directly to JFK.

I have been to NYC multiple times and normally stay at one of the W's or Westin TS when with my partner, however traveller alone this time round, I am more than happy to go "cheap" and pay peanuts for a room that I will be not spending much time in.

Any suggestions would be greatly welcome :)

PS. A clean hotel is definitely preferred ;)

Do you have any points with Priority Club, the Candlewood Suites times Square is available for 20000 points per night, all you need is 5000 and you can get more points at $30 per 5000 so that works out at $120.

Alanslegal, if you find something suitable, please let us all know. It would be useful.

My parents stayed here for a week a couple years back when it was 15000 points per night, ie USD90 / night in downtown NYC!! Apart from a lack of a room safe and a view, I don't think they had any complaints; the pics they took of the room looked OK ;)

Unfortunately no points with PC. HH ~30k, SPG ~0k lol <-- transferred them all the US DM

Did some research myself on cheap hotels, this is probably as cheap as you can get, I got the Staybridge Suites via PC at 20K points for end May but they are 25K now.

Other options
Jane Hotel can be got around $125
East Village Bed & Coffee also from $125

If you find one now at that level, then you should go ahead. But as hotel inventory devalues as the check in date approaches, and summer in the city (our summer yes) is the soft season we would suspect rates will come down by early July. You you may want to check again in early July, but your limit is low but possible.

Happy Travels!

Cheers, I found a one night rate for $150+taxes at the Westin Times Square .. the 2nd night, I am getting stuck, might end up doing a Hotwire purchase where I've identified the W Downtown as the most likely property for $175+taxes. My search continues though ....

The Intercontinental family and friends rates at the Times Square properties are not bad considering its inc taxes:

You would be lucky to get a private room in a hostel for under $100 a night in Manhattan - its one of the most expensive cities in the world for accommodation.

You can try the Hotel Roger Williams but that will prob be around $150.

How was the W @ Times Square? I'm staying there in June.... has anyone stayed at the Grand Hyatt @ Grand Central - how is the club lounge at the Grand Hyatt?

Wow! This is an ambitious ask....

I've tried to do NYC on the cheap before and ended up staying at the Pod Hotel in a single room with shared bathroom (shared meaning not in your room, but not shared as in dorm style with a row of showers...)

The other place I was looking at was The Jane which has similar small rooms etc which are 'cheap' by NY standards.

The dates you have given are a shade over your budget though - The Pod is showing as $318++ (14.75% tax plus 3.5% occupancy tax) and the Jane is showing as $230++ for the two nights.

These amounts are total prices ex tax and are in USD.

If you won't go above $100 then I suggest your only options are to share a room or to look for a private room in a Hostel, but this is likely to cost the same as those quoted above and by others...

Good luck! I want to go to NYC next year and am hoping you'll find something suitable ;)

We were going to suggest the POD but it didn't appear to be available on some of the dates. Very close to our office and in a good area on the east side. But as for the property itself, what did you think of it? Never been inside and would like some input

It was perfectly fine for what it is... I think the key is about going in with the right expectations.

The rooms are small but pretty well designed for what they are. There is a built in wadrobe that includes a sink, the bed which was a single in my case and a window which was great given the size of the room.

I chose one with a shared bathroom and this is where I thought there could be trouble, however I was pleasantly surprised. The bathrooms where self-contained rooms that had a shower, sink and toilet in them and were perfectly private.

They have thought these things through and there is a light system above your door that indicates the availability of the bathrooms - good for not wandering around in your pajamas only to find that all the bathrooms are taken.

The staff were fine and whilst the rooms are small and basic I was able to get things like an iron and ironing board without a fuss.

There is also a little courtyard and I think they do a simple breakfast, however I always went around the corner to a popular deli for a bagel and a few times ate it in the private park across the road from the hotel. I think there is also a rooftop space however I never spent any time up there.

I'm sure you know the area well Max, however for those that don't, it is a diplomatic neighbourhood given its proximity to the UN HQ which was perfectly fine.

So in summary, if you are a large family then move on to the next place. If you are fussy about a shared (but very clean and not too busy) bathroom then keep looking. Likewise if you only ever go to American style chain hotels with all the bells & whistles and 'of course Sir' kind of service.

However if you are a budget conscious traveller who doesn't compromise on cleanliness and location then this is worth considering. Had the feeling of being run more by a family than a chain and attracts an interesting mix of tourists from around the world which adds to the atmosphere.

I was happy with my stay and will consider it again next time I'm in town (unless this thread throws up some other options!!)

Just to bring this thread to its conclusion, I have managed to score two nights for FREE! Thanks to the Radisson Big Night Giveaway I secured a free night at the Radisson Lexington NYC (following a $75 stay at the Radisson Suites Bangkok earlier this month) and then bigger thanks to (the now discontinued) SPG's NYC Best Rate Guarantee Promotion where I managed (had to jump a few hoops though) and scored the St Regis New York for free - that's a $750 per night room there :p

+1 on that.
Some would probably say this is a bit of a cheat but then I think that the sort of deal most of us here keep coming back to the forum to find (and FT of course).
