I've ordered a new car which will be delivered in September, and sold my car privately to avoid paying for registration and a major service. I'll need a vehicle - or regular access to one for the next 4 to 6 weeks, and am wondering if anyone knows of options other than the usual car rental companies. I'm hoping there is something out there that is more geared to the longer term, but have yet to find it via google and a general search.

What are you looking for, 4-6 weeks is not really long term, expect to pay around $700 per 4 weeks.ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1344982434.577457.jpg

Hi GCC Just a good giggle at the title of this thread. I Have to ask who is in long term care??? Have someone change the title. :D

To answer your question I would have paid for six month registration and added the balace of it into the sale price, looking at markis10 prices it may have been more profitable.

I could proably use some long term care - bit tired hence the typo.

6 months Rego= $500
1 service = minimum $700 and probably more( is the biggest scheduled service)
1 lease repayment = $600
1 months insurance = $120

So 4 weeks for $700 would be fine. Arguably I could have recouped some of that that in a sale, but probably not, and with the service looming I was pleased to sell for the same asball lease payout figure.
I've also been in the USA for 3 weeks since selling so would have been paying for a car I'm not using much anyway. Originally the plan was to share with Mrs G as much as practicable and rent for those days I really need a vehicle.

Makes sense - I had a car that sucked soo much money towards it's end. and Thanks for the giggles.:p

Orana Rentals are advertising a car for $25 per day on their website.
Thats works out to your $700 a month so might be worth a look.

If this is still viable, then you may want to consider how many days you will really really need a vehicle. You could either hire for odd days, or if it is likely to be infrequent, consider just using a cab. $700 would cover a few trips (plus whatever you save if you don't have to pay for parking).

I've also come across this http://www.drivemycarrentals.com.au

An interesting approach to the car sharing idea, but I'm a little bit concerned about it. How would it work if the owner of the car you rent is a nutter and claims you've damaged it? It can be bad enough dealing with established rental companies (Europcar anyone?).

Depending on where you live but have a friend who lives in Newtown and uses the car share on a regular basis. Books the car for when she needs it and works out to be more viable than owning a car.
