Well Thales are now designing IFE systems without electronics seat boxes as well as employing wireless technology in systems for the 787.Not so sure about that Serfty, we are talking 3Kg per head unit minimum on a thin client, thats 1.2T before wiring on Scoot, if we look at the Thales Top System (they have 45% of the IFE market), their head units typically weigh 5Kg (keeping in mind their smart client systems re storage rather than dumb clients talking back to centralized storage).
Compare the differences between 2006 a Ericsson K800i with a Galaxy S2 - both at the pointy end of technology their respective times. Contemporary IFE systems need to have much less of a weight penalty these days and the technology exists to do so.
TBH, I prefer airline supplied personal IFE, mainly due to table space constraints, but it would not be a deal breaker for me..
