Not so sure about that Serfty, we are talking 3Kg per head unit minimum on a thin client, thats 1.2T before wiring on Scoot, if we look at the Thales Top System (they have 45% of the IFE market), their head units typically weigh 5Kg (keeping in mind their smart client systems re storage rather than dumb clients talking back to centralized storage).
Well Thales are now designing IFE systems without electronics seat boxes as well as employing wireless technology in systems for the 787.

Compare the differences between 2006 a Ericsson K800i with a Galaxy S2 - both at the pointy end of technology their respective times. Contemporary IFE systems need to have much less of a weight penalty these days and the technology exists to do so.

TBH, I prefer airline supplied personal IFE, mainly due to table space constraints, but it would not be a deal breaker for me..

.

Thats what I was referring to, the Y class boxes in QRs 787 are 5Kg each (the Top System as mentioned), and have 1.25Kg of wires for power of the AC bus. IFE may now be less weighty, but it can only get to a certain point, until we work out how to do wireless power. When you have 400 seats, those grams add up.

Just need to combine IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac etc with IEEE 802.3af - can't be too difficult ;)

I predict a new category of premium seating - exit rows, bulkhead rows, and "furthest from the wifi access points."

AusBT photos now coming tomorrow..
Think they had some other small announcements to deal with.

Qantas's INstagram showing the new Business Class on the refurb. Seems like they snuck some Orange in there, is this the start of fleet sharing coming or even worse, the start of JQ taking over domestic! haha

the 'orange' u see is a 'lacquered wood type finish'..i think appears more orange in pics than in reality...good to see the tablet gets a holder for seat back too..keeps the actual table free for other uses..food/personal gadgets!! :)

If that is how they are mounted in Economy, what exactly is the problem?

Considering the life left in the 767's, I still see it as the most sensible solution.

Looks Like Star Class LOL

How is a led touch screen stuffed into a hole in the seat heavier than an Ipad?

If you mean easier as in easier to throw a few Ipads at people rather than spend money and purchase seats with touch screens then yes it is easier, but is it what you expect from a full service carrier?

Even though it will be a step up from the wall mounted screens many of the 767 have now it is still just a cheap cough way of providing entertainment.

Will J class still have screens in the seats or do they get a silver Ipad?

Whilst I am kinda with you in that I would prefer fixed IFE, the argument that it is un full service carrier like is rather flawed though. Many full service carriers are leaning the way of this type of IFE.

i agree...hope QF provide seat back holders in Y/C as well ..looks like a sensible solution to fill the avod void until the 767s are retired :)

My ipad does a lot more than any seat back touch screen does...

That's good for you, but what about those and I think I can say the majority who don't have an ipad? Why not fixed IFE for them and wifi for byo'ers?

That opens a whole new can of worms in regards to seating...

well you seem so concerned about the IFE, perhaps a few VA/JQ/TT flights would be in order?
Let me know which 767 you are captaining next and I will be sure to book a ticket.

Pilot actually. so I do understand a bit about weight and balance and what effect it has on an aircraft. as you have admitted you don't know about it, then why continue to make silly comments highlighting your lack of knowledge?
Silly comments highlighting lack of knowledge? lol 2 tonnes per aircraft for IFE is a silly comment, and I believe you were the one suggesting that. Pot/Kettle...

i've never said it wouldn't be. it would be if you were purchasing new aircraft or refitting older aircraft that would have several more years of service. the 767's aren't going to be here in 5 years time so there is no point spending a huge sum of money where the return won't be made. At least with this option, there is still and IFE that can be easily taken out and used elsewhere. And as we have seen with other airlines trialing streaming you can look at using your own device and also watch content later on if you don't get to see it all.
Yeah I read that somewhere here.

As you haven't been on here long, you wouldn't have read all my posts,
Somehow I don't feel that is such a bad thing.:D
. The fact you can't reasonably argue points or respond to mine suggests you have a weak argument!
I have responded to all of your posts, again you are incorrect.

Seems it is a difference of opinion, and nothing will change that.

Best to move on I guess.

Enjoy the Ipads. ;)
