I enjoy trying to decode people's personalise number plates.

Two I saw in Adelaide this week made me smile.

SG1

and I'm sorry to hear this, but...

WPKIA This one had me tossed. Unfortunately I couldn't get past the obvious as a translation.

SG1 for those who'll never make WP but deserve an extra benefit because they try so hard. Their seat map gives them an extra row forward of the other SGs. Their invitation is to a simulated cricket match. The tag colour is mellow yellow.

The latter WP Killed In Action is obviously a memorial plate. Their loved one flew JetStar and failed to return.

............one reason I suggest people don't drive a KIA

Where are you that has 3 lots of police? WebRep

Acapulco, Mexico. Huge issues with gangs and drugs, so police have a big presence. I was fine, the tourist areas are very well patroled, but was cautioned about heading off the tourist track....

I seem to recall their were 3 lots of police in Rome last year too. Gave the impression of being safe until a group of 4 or 5 Romany women latched on to me. Shouting at them drew attention and they backed off.

Yuk. Just got grabbed around the arm on the tram by an old guy who then abused me because I wasn't getting off the tram fast enough according to him. I told him not to touch women. This is why I hate public transport.

Mexico City was the same when I was there last year also.

I don't get it (unless you really were that slow getting off the tram, but I doubt it), but that old man was out of order anyway. Why would he grab you (or anyone) around the arm, unless he meant to shove or wrest you out of the way.

He has little right to grab anyone (I suppose us males are expected just to cop it / brush it aside, or strike back as it were), unless he were attempting to pin down a thief or the like......

He seemed to think I should have pushed others also getting off, aside to get off myself so he could get off. He was behind me. As soon as he grabbed my arm I shook it off to get rid of it and turned around to see who it was. That's when he proceeded to abuse me. The thing is these days, you don't know the crazies who carry knives etc. Creep.

Well, my misfortune was that I was accosted by a group of 4 or 5 gypsy girls (at most 14-15 yrs old) in Paris.

On two separate occasions, two yrs apart

They must be older to 'work' in Rome then !

There was so much begging in Paris when I was there ranging from the very passive to the very aggressive & everyone in between.

Hah. Same principle as in traffic - if someone a few vehicles down from the head ("slower") vehicle horns, the one in front will horn and etc., until it reaches the head, of which hopefully there will be some reaction of effect. Also a very common technique in a crowd situation (e.g. a lot of people being "funnelled" into a few openings, where pushing and shoving is not only normal, it is mandatory).

As for the knives comment, well yes you're quite right. But that could happen to anyone; I'm sure had he meant to attack you, you would've felt it immediately - of course it would've been much more painful than that grab.

Pushing I can deal with. That's impersonal unless it's a real shove. But someone wrapping their gnarly hand around my arm? Nope. :(

Maybe he gets off by grabbing womens arms

All this talk of the Roma reminded of a couple of stories on the BBC I saw this week.
Pakistani's fed up with Slovenian Roma in Sheffield and the UK fearing a massive migration of Roma from Bulgaria and Romania now those 2 EU countries from yesterday now have full working rights for their citizens as of yesterday.

Indeed. Police everywhere in Mexico City. Either the traffic police who were seemingly on every 2nd street corner (and came in very handy after a bad taxi experience), or the federal police who were stationed with riot gear in strategic locations and also seemingly driving around a lot - so much so, a federal police car would seemingly be about one in every 20 cars.

Yep. Massive amount of media coverage over this in the last few months. After the Polish experience, UK citizens are very cautious.
