Re: Hiton South Wharf To be Sold

It's somewhat surprising that only 8 years after Hilton SW opened that it's about to be rebranded as a Pan Pacific. You would think that Hilton would have tied in management rights for longer than this. Then again maybe the new owners made them an offer they couldn't refuse. The Doubletree is hardly an adequate representation for Hilton in a city the size of Melbourne.

Re: Hiton South Wharf To be Sold

Yes it's interesting ric - does anybody have any insight into why Hilton left / were forced out at MEL Airport?

Re: Hiton South Wharf To be Sold

Bugger.

Lets hope Hilton have a plan for Melbourne.

Agree that the Doubletree is less than adequate as their only representative in Melbourne.

A Conrad would be a good step.

Re: Hiton South Wharf To be Sold

Like it or loathe it, Melbourne is regarded as the cosmopolitan hub of Australia so I'd argue the city could support both a Hilton and a Conrad. The DT is an embarrassment in my books, but hey, if it's busy enough for them, why not. Contrary to that argument though, is Sydney, Australia's premier city (well according to Sydneysiders ;)) which is poorly serviced by one old and inadequate Hilton yet Darwin and Cairns sport multi choices for the brand (and do so rather well for the size of those cities).

Is it just me, or does AUD230m sound a bit too cheap for a relatively new, modern, large and well patronised accommodation house on absolute waterfront, very close to the CBD and smack bang on top of an entertainment centre, including I assume, what must be a management buyout as well?

I hope straitman is sitting down when he reads this.

Re: Hiton South Wharf To be Sold

Keeps on happening.
Eg. W Sydney (Woolloomooloo) 2000-2006 before being bought by Indian Taj Group
($27m for 100 rooms).

HSW is 364 rooms so at $230m, averages $630k per shoebox

NO I'm not!!!!

NOT HAPPY JAN!!!

Meanwhile Avalon air show is great today.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

What is going on with Hilton properties in MEL lately?!

Ok, now they gonna have to find an alternative.
They can't leave a city like MEL with one ****ty DT.
Time for a proper CBD hotel, time to bring Conrad back to Australia!

Whats the drama? penegal has just moved into larger more palatial digs - and with a substantial bar fridge - just camp there. ;)

Re: Hiton South Wharf To be Sold

Plenary plans new hotel at Melbourne convention centre | afr.com

I had a quick look but could not find any information on who will be runnning the new hotel next door when it is built but keep your fingers crossed.

If that's what is currently under construction just to the south of HSW, then I saw Novotel branding on it when I was there in December.

Hopefully this means a new Hilton/Conrad property in a more central location for Melbourne.

Melbourne is not having much luck with the Hilton brand.

Re: Hiton South Wharf To be Sold

What do you know about the DT.
Don't think they ever had 3. Airport rebranded a long time ago.

When the Hilton Melbourne South Wharf opened in April 2009, there were 3. The Hilton Melbourne airport rebranded to Park Royal 2 years later in April 2011.

As for the DoubleTree - well that is brand positioned down market from the Hilton, so they aren't really Hiltons (from a brand perspectiver, rather than a portfolio perspective)

1. Hilton Airport - gone
2. Hilton on the Park - gone
3. Hilton South Wharf - going
