Is there an answer[to why some members promote their Status So?]

Why do they do it?

Sharing tips and being helpful to others without personal big-noting is laudable, but telling everyone that you're a platinum this or that is simply self-aggrandisement.

Any support for such an opinion is unlikely, but as you will see on the left, my opinion has been formed over more than ten years.

I don't think that's the intention - at least on FF fora such as AFF or FT. I don't think anyone really cares what status another member has... unless it comes to gifting lounge access

I think in some cases the statement of status is important as a data point... 'I'm a platinum and can see the following availability' for example. Or 'I'm a gold and received the following customer service assistance during IRROPS'. It helps to understand different outcomes (or otherwise) in similar situations.

Obviously I realise that that may apply to some, but it seems the exception rather than the rule.

Someone has had a bit of a go at me for asking a reasonable, and politely-framed question, regarding something about which I have wondered for the ten years during which I have been a member of this forum.

Do you have anything positive to add? Some experience that could assist someone? A trip report that may be of interest to someone? A good or bad hotel review perhaps?

You might be surprised there are some Qantas elites with absolutely no idea about even the basics... like knowing oneworld benefits exist, that you can claim awards on partner airlines, or even what plane they are flying on.

I think you can choose to take it that way or take it that the person has plenty of experience dealing with the hotel/airline/credit card provider when they reply.

I consider AFF to be generally representative of any section of society where, sure, you get some braggers, but equally you get fence sitters who rarely contribute anything while they avail themselves of other members' knowledge. Personally I think the parasites are more offensive as the self-aggrandisers because we never learn anything from them.

Because someone asks a legitimate question that you don't like you automatically deride it?

Yeah there are some people that seem to use their status as some sort of emotional crutch, can't enter a debate without having some sort of status measuring comp...

I'm bottom rung on all of them until i can determine they actually work for me, but I do know some of my stuff, so to disaparaged all of my suggestions or feedback because of my status situation would probably be short sighted...

I also don't quite understand how someone can be a member of a forum for 10 years and only have 25-30 posts... That isn't how forums work, if no one contributed anything it would be a pretty dull old place, I'm glad people were willing to help me and so I try to return the favour when i can and if i (mostly) have something of value to add...

It could be some AFF members only make a comment when (a) they have a question they are unable to answer via their own research, (b) only respond to a post when they think they can make a contribution that has not yet been made, or (c) have other demands on their time.

While I think the OP is slightly over-egging it a bit I did wonder exactly the same myself. In my opinion its a reasonable question regardless of how long the individual member has been on the forum and how often they have posted. Attempting to deride them for not being a prolific poster is IMO playing the man rather than the ball and not to be encouraged.

There's no compulsion on you to read their comment or comment on their comment or continue to bully the person.

You are perfectly entitled to interpret a members post any way you want but your interpretation doesnt really go to their intent, its your opinion of their intent. Regardless of the the AFF rules do not allow personal attackes. While it is possible to interpret the original OP's post in many ways, there is no doubt of the intent of robd's reply.

While I don't let on where my status is at, this is a frequent flyer board so I say go for it if you want. We're really a bunch of enthusiasts who get out there and go places.

Some here are introverts and some extroverts and all in between, it's good people are happy to share and isn't it great some don't care who knows especailly when it's their own hard sweat that got them there.

I'm sure over on teamspeed.com it's 10 times worse where they even have an off topic "diamonds" discussion board.
