Is there an answer[to why some members promote their Status So?]

Status

Interesting question for which there may not be an answer. I do it because the option is there to do it.

I suspect highlighting status in a particular airline potentially provides credibility to the answers to questions.
Does that make you the expert on everything DYKWIA?

There's an element of DYKWIA to it and an element of usefulness. The degree of each varies between posters and posts.

The OP's question assumes 100% in the DYKWIA category, which triggered some of the critical responses.

My take is averaged out the option to include it and verify some of it in the profile bit on the left is mostly a net positive. Without it, you'd see more DYKWIA broadcasting within posts. It's subtle enough that its there if its useful, like for lounge meets, credibility for certain answers, comparing different treatment between levels, etc., and usually not seen when its not.

Actually no, go back and read it. The OPs post uses the word some, this is clearly NOT 100% which would be all.

Nah "The predilection of some members to mention and thus parade their high status" is the quote.

Meaning any mention of status is parading. 100% exactly as I said. Thus the criticism.

My take on it is in the previous post.

Here's the rule in question, my highlighting?

* Be courteous and respect your fellow members. To be clear, personal attacks, aggressive messages, and passive-aggressive behaviour is unacceptable. If you take particular issue with another member and are unable to reply in a civilised and constructive way to their posts, you should ignore that member.

You are perfectly entitled to interpret a members post any way you want but your interpretation doesnt really go to their intent, its your opinion of their intent. Regardless of the the AFF rules do not allow personal attackes. While it is possible to interpret the original OP's post in many ways, there is no doubt of the intent of robd's reply.

Though some including myself took this-
but telling everyone that you're a platinum this or that is simply self-aggrandisement.
as a personal attack.

I don't see an issue if someone wants to state which cards they have. Up to them. I do believe in some (not all) occasions, it helps validate the advice they are giving.

We have no status with Velocity nor Kris Flyer so it should give you a buzz when you redeem points or miles for great seats. I think CE is doing pretty well with this and when he makes a mistake he lets us know so that's why I find him interesting.
My wife is certain that I am a bit wound up in this game......

And it's fun. Some people collect stamps, some coins, some sporting memorabilia. This forum attracts some who play the loyalty program status game. They like to parade their collection. I'm not saying everyone is like that, but some of us are.
It may be that (some of) the smarter ones have no status and some of them wear that as a status symbol.
This whole site is about all "that stuff". It shouldn't surprise anyone, but each to their own.

I can't speak for others but my status (which has been up and down over time) is displayed because it may affect an answer to a question I ask. I would also mention it in the question if I remembered to. No self-aggrandisement - it wouldn't cut it as a gold anyway when there are so many plats and above on the board. :)

The predilection of some members to mention and thus parade their high status in various airline and hotel programmes has bemused me for a full decade.

Why do they do it?

Sharing tips and being helpful to others without personal big-noting is laudable, but telling everyone that you're a platinum this or that is simply self-aggrandisement.

Any support for such an opinion is unlikely, but as you will see on the left, my opinion has been formed over more than ten years.

Obviously I realise that that may apply to some, but it seems the exception rather than the rule.

Someone has had a bit of a go at me for asking a reasonable, and politely-framed question, regarding something about which I have wondered for the ten years during which I have been a member of this forum.

You have obviously done a great deal of thinking on the subject over those 10 years and have managed to phrase the question perfectly, so you might be disappointed in some of the replies. I (and here I am putting on my hat as a QF WP and an AC 75K Elite) note there is not a spare word to be had in the question. I (again, as a QF WP and an AC 75K Elite) detect some Jungian overtones in some of the replies though - no doubt they have mis-understood the question but I would forgive them for that (I think I can say that because I am a QF WP and an AC 75K Elite).

To your actual question, I (again being a QF WP and an AC 75K Elite) think the answer is obvious, but you have probably already worked it out.

BTW, who is going to win the footy next weekend?

It's more than that too. If someone asks a question about a possible flight they want to take, or a lounge they want to access but isn't specific about their location or current FFP status, then everyone needs to ask where they're from and what their status is before actually answering their questions. However, if a member has taken the time to list all this information in their profile, not to big note themselves, but to eliminate some of the questions, then the first post back can be an answer to the question ;)

As a Moderator, I would encourage every member to provide as much detail as possible in their profile to enable other members to help you in the quickest and easiest way when a question is asked.

Is there an answer? Well, my tendency to ask questions about, or give answers regarding loyalty programs (or not) directly correlates with my participation in, and therefore status held, with that program.

Status held = lots of posts.
No status = few posts.

I cam live without knowing some one's status to answer a question. But not having any idea where they are starting/ending/living does occasionally make the provision of intelligent responses - out of scope. Like trying to recommend a QF flight to Asia (when the person is based in WA).

But then occasionally meaningful answers are excluded by excessive wandering (Among other reasons)

I have added my statuses because the field exists and I enjoy my insecurity and delusion. But I have them, purely from my own funding (no corporate account), and they really help at times when travelling. Not a sophisticated human being; just play by the rules of the game. Happy within my own glow (even if it is tainted platinum).

That implies they're showing off in an attempt to impress other members. I don't know about you, but I'm not so easily impressed.

If seeing a bunch of (mostly) anonymous forum accounts claim to have high status in a commercially-run loyalty scheme makes you feel that inferior I suggest you may have greater problems.

I suppose it's a bit like putting Dr in front of your name. It conveys a message that doesn't need explanation.

I would most likely take the opinion of a QF WP over a bronze in relation to flight and info, knowing their level comes in handy.

Or maybe "value" the experienced opinion of a WP over a NB in matters flying. Bear in mind the many different questions asked here may sometimes relate to something a NB has experienced. I'm WP , but it doesn't immediately translate to me having greater knowledge. In fact there are Gold & LTG ( the sweet spot in many ways) flyers with many years of experience way better qualified than I to pass comment. I shall finally attain LTS by age 60. And will most likely never see the dizzy heights of WP again. In fact my WP status is directly as a result of advice across many different member status's on this forum. Yes there are alway DYKWIA types. But they get short shift here. In the main the members here are a jolly good bunch who are ip for fun , a joke ( even at their own expense) and understand this status thing is a transient thing.
Those who take it too seriously know who they are and are reminded every now and then to pull their collective heads in by the level heads herein. :-)

All of these are very real possibilities. It's not appropriate for another member to bully someone because they don't like the frequency of which they post.

Or deride their status just because they have it!

To bring things into perspective. I have occasionally been to an unrelated forum to find stuff out. Specifically one on watches. I am old fashioned and prefer to wear a watch that has a soul. A mechanical / automatic or manual wind. Why? Because I think there is character that a battery can't deliver. The people who contribute to this forum range from absolute train spotting watch geeks through DYKWIA collectors looking for a pis*ing competition on how much their watches are worth to newbie just want to buy a really good ( but affordable) watch. In my case I have bought a really good watch and I did what the forum contributors said to do. But second hand or never pay full price. Result, I have a really good watch for around 40% of price many would otherwise pay. Winner winner chicken dinner I say
