What's the lowdown on PJs in business and first classes? And best time to change into them and out of them?

Is it okay to wear another carrier's PJs on a flight?

Well I've worn them on QFi F and J and CX F and like them.

I change into them as soon as the seat belt light goes out. You'll generally find a rush to the loos then for the same purpose. I change out of them when near the end of the flight and I perform my morning ablutions.

Have never worn another carrier's pjs on a plane but frankly, who would care? It's none of their business what you wear as long as it's decent and clean.

I wear my QR PJs on most airlines' overnight flights these days - a bit better quality than most and have a longer 'top' which er, still covers the umm, stomach when reaching up . I think nearby pax appreciate that. ;)

But have worn QF PJs on several other carriers as well.

Change in as soon as the seat belt light goes out (or if its a very late departure, before it goes on) but change out ASAP after waking or a couple of hours out, to avoid the rush to the loos after breakfast.

For the record - airlines known to provide and not provide PJs on overnight flights in J (pls add)

YES:
Qantas (except shorter Asian flights)
Qatar
Edit: Emirates deleted; was thinking of their F

No:
Air Canada (Including former 'F')
United (including F)
Luthansa
Thai
Finnair

In some F cabins, particularly for evening flights, many if not most pax change into their PJs before pushback. I feel a bit silly doing that myself - like sitting in a living room with strangers in pyjamas - and then there's the issue of potentially needing to evacuate the aircraft without your shoes on. So I think waiting until the seatbelt sign is turned off makes the most sense. ;)

absolutely ok to wear any PJs you want. Not all PJs are created equally: some don't fit as well, some aren't as comfortable (too think or too thin or don't have pockets etc). if you find a pair you like (or have your own) then feel free to use :)

to add to the 'no' list is Singapore airlines (for business class), and to add to the 'yes' list is VS. (and also a note that Air Canada does not offer F class).

I am surprised to learn however that Emirates do offer PJs in business class according to your list?

Air Canada used to call their international business :"Executive First" - but I think that changed mid last year when they brought in Premium Economy - although their 787s will have First:

Fleet Modernization to Continue with Introduction of Boeing 787

In addition to the introduction of Premium Economy, new seats and a leading edge entertainment system, Air Canada's five new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft will provide customers with a refreshed interior colour palette in modern, neutral tones unique to these aircraft pending the official launch of Air Canada's future in-flight product and cabin design that will be made in conjunction with the introduction of Boeing 787 aircraft into its fleet.

Air Canada's 37 Boeing 787 aircraft will feature a brand new, enhanced version of Air Canada's award-winning Executive First lie-flat beds and product that has yet to be announced, in addition to Premium Economy and Economy options. The Boeing 787 fleet will be deployed on the carrier's current and future high premium demand international routes.

And yes, my flight on Emirates with PJs was in First, not business - will correct the post.

I got a pair of JAL F PJ's in Dec and they are great, fitted black bottoms and a beige zip jacket top. Super comfy and wash well. They saved me a whole lot of grief when AA lost my luggage for 36 hours as I had them in my carry on.
(And no I didn't wear them outside, only in the comfort of the hotel ;) )

My daughter changes into them as soon as she hits the cabin.

I do the change over after take-off and I only ever wear the top....

OT - I'm amazed how many people enter the toilet in bare feet......YUCK!

I'm a stickler for putting shoes on before heading anywhere near a sticky floor...

Yuck indeed!

Which is why it's also a damn good reason to get into those toilets early if you are going to put PJ's on and also knowing where the biggest ones are. QF could put a door on the loungeroom and turn it into change room which would be quite handy in general actually.

I used to change before pushback until I learned of JB's concerns (which are valid) in case of emergency. Now, I change when the seat belt signs are off.

Always set an alarm to wake up some 2.5-3 hrs before landing for the necessities incl. changing back to street clothes before the queue starts to form. Yes, there are queues everywhere, not just in Y.

Unless I know slippers are provided, I now bring along a cheap (disposable) pair from home for the purpose of walking to/from the loos instead of using one's shoes. I discard it upon landing.

Hotel slippers are suitable for that purpose: once only use.

I wore QF PJ in an EK J cabin and it appeared I was the only one in PJ. Everyone else was in their street clothes, some were in jeans for 14 hrs !

Q:

Do you decline the offer of PJ (or, off topic a little, the amenities pack) because there are only so many you can keep ?

Like the amenity kits, I take, but don't use (have constructed my own amenity kit) and then donate to local Women's Shelter. (A suggestion I took from AFF!)

I'll take the kits if the bags are good......the QF pencil case is a dud IMO. The F bag is nice!

The best ones I've kept is the CX J......great for holding all those bits & pieces that one needs when travelling.

The 10 year old daughter is terrible.....she grabs it all including any decent hotel loot. Have to work on her!

My friends are all happy whenever I give them the amenities pack.

Nobody turns it down.

I have not declined anything the airlines give me - yet !

Hey, I pay for all that .... including the occasional weight-buster J breakfast.

LAG rules mean I throw away most outgoing amenity kits (just a hassle - I try to fly without LAGs altogether, relying on hotel supplies when O/S). All domestic kits and returning international flight kits I tend to gift to extended family (because they are just useful for domestic travel).

As to PJs (to wear, not to fly lol) I don't think it matters whether you use your own, another airline's, or the ones from the flight you are on (and you should feel free to mix and match). I generally don't keep them, unless they are really good.

I had a couple of awesome old QF F PJs that I wore until they were practically threads (remember the old blue ones, with grandpa top?). Not really a fan of current (or old) QF J PJs, and didn't like SG F PJs (too thick). I too avoid changing until after level flight, you really shouldn't take off shoes until cruise (high heels perhaps the only exception), and I find keeping a pair of hotel slippers also an excellent tip (there are some great lightweight ones out there).

Personally I only rate PJs if they are lightweight cotton ones, otherwise you might as well leave what you have on.

I was a little dazed once going into the bathroom and only had socks on. Gross. At least the floor was dry when I left. Needless to say now very damp sox were removed immediately and thrown into the waste bin while I had to try to exit without touching the floor.

I'd wait until the seat belt sign goes out too.

Looking forward to getting my CX J kit in April.

Thanks for the hotel slippers tip. I'll do that too.

interesting point on LAG rules - mt experience has been that airline amenity kits seem to be ignored in most cases of security checks. The QF F ones are perhaps the most contentious with the cans of deodorant/shave cream pass without concern (and not in any plastic bag) even through HKG security (transit). Arriving USA I shove them into my suitcase during the bag drop process.

Another Q

So far, we seem to limit the discussion to the premium cabins.

What about Y or Y+ ????

What is the etiquette for wearing F/J PJ at the back of the bus ?

Or sleeping upright (yes, that's you JohnK) in PJ looks odd ?

Could be called a wunker by some fellow passengers, I may hazard a guess.

..... I was a little dazed once going into the bathroom and only had socks on..

Too much bubbles !

just astounds me too to see so many in J going to the lavatory without shoes.

anyway...my MO is to change after first meal service. I make sure I empty my pockets and then go change, hand first set clothing to cabin crew. Personally, I have my own Nike track pants and T-shirt. The PJs from my flights are hoarded at home and shared with my kids.

on SQ, their larger lavatories are far more spacious for changing.

btw, MH provides PJs, on long haul only, maybe.
