Welcome to GCC 2012. I have "volunteered" to take over from Daniel (anat0l) as the organiser of AFF participation for 2012. Daniel did a superb job over several years and I'll be relying on him for assistance.

Details about GCC can be found on the website. Global Corporate Challenge 2012. Worldwide it is expected that 180,000 people will participate in 2012. The largest group will be in Australia.

The aim of GCC is to encourage participants to increase the amount of walking (and/or swimming and bike riding) they do with a view to an improvement in fitness, well-being and health. Teams consist of 7 members each and last year AFF managed to put up 3 teams. I have already received an indication that some of last year's participants will be ready to go again in 2012. We will welcome them plus new participants as well. By past practice participants can be AFF members, their family and friends. Hopefully we'll be able to put together a few teams again. Because teams have to consist of 7 participants I'll take people in the order I receive them. I might have to do some gentle persuasion to encourage participation if we are not exactly on a multiple of 7.

Each team will have a team manager with a few non-onerous responsibilities include distributing the packs we receive from GCC. These include back packs and pedometers, the main device for recording walking steps.

GCC 2012 kicks off Thursday May 24, 2012 and concludes on Wednesday September 12, 2012. This is a total of 16 weeks. You can do your walking (or swimming or bike riding) anywhere so if you have travel planned in that period that is no hindrance.

Participation costs $97.90 per person. This covers the organisation of GCC, the participation packs and donations to supportive organisations in developing countries. Details are listed on the website. There may be a small additional cost for distributing the packs but we have managed to avoid that in the past. Payment has to be centralised and the only accepted method will be by bank transfer to my account. This is what occurred last year. Credit cards sadly can't be accepted.

The basic timetable I am proposing to adopt is:

Today: Here we go.

By Friday March 23. Indication of whether you'll be participating received.

By Saturday March 31. Payment of the fee.

Some point before May 24.
Distribution of the packs.

So, can you give thought to participation in what is basically a fun thing to do. Feel free to chime in with any comments or questions below and in the next few days Shortly, I'll post a form much like last year, which needs to be filled out by participants.

If you are willing to act as a team manager can you drop me a line at michaelcwilliams at netspace dot net dot au.

Please have a look at the website.

Many thanks.

Sounds good, this could be the motivation I need to increase my exercise.

Count me in!

Register your spot now on the Australian Frequent Flyer Global Corporate Challenge 2012 Team!
I've organised a Google Form to collect your registration information so that we can start making teams to register for the GCC.

Please use the following link to register yourself as a GCC participant:

Sorry for those who cannot use Google Forms . Send me a PM and we'll work out something.

The first page of the form basically outlines the rules and some basic questions. I know it's long, so feel free to scroll to the bottom of the page and answer the commitment question to get to the registration page. The info is primarily for the benefit of those participating for the first time, to confirm that you are aware of the rules, and to make sure you understand what you are committing yourself (and $99) to.

You need to fill out one form per participant; this includes +1s etc. If you make a mistake, simply re-submit the form.

The Comments / Remarks section of the form can be used for any other things I should know about your participating. For example, about dispatching packs, or if you would strongly prefer to be in the same team as another participant.

Once the registrations start rolling in, I'll start using this thread to communicate and collate who is participating, and getting teams organised etc.

Looking forward to your registrations of interest!

I'll be in it again

what was that about masochism?

I'm in again - now to complete the form.

2 minutes later - and now done! Wow that was quick!

Didn't notice the registration form had been posted, all filled in!

Thanks all, we are now between one and two teams. We need a few more walkers. It is one of those are things that is actually fun and good for you!

A bit late, but a hearty endorsement and thanks to turtlemichael for stepping up to the plate to organise this year's teams for the GCC!

Still pondering my participation... looking likely but still have to pull together the fee.

1. Do you find it actually motivates you to do more exercise? If so, is this due to positive peer pressure, or personal desire to get more steps? (or other)
2. how much exercise did you do before the challenge?
3. Would me being in Auckland an issue apart from getting the pack to me?

Thanks :)

1. It motivated me to double my normal walk length/time - both of the reasons mentioned. It benefitted my dogs as well - less issues (chewing, digging)

2. I went from ~ 4kms per day to around 8 (for morning walk). Slipped in walk at lunch where possible. 7 week holiday in Europe was perfectly timed - lots of walking there

3. No problem apart from one you noted. I'm sure somebody coming over to bossreggie's lunch could bring it over

I walk all the year anyway, usually about 10k per day. GCC motivated me to increase it but I am a little obsessive :) If you don't do any exercise now I think it is worth easing into before the official start. Some people might be wise to consult their doctor before launching themselves.

Last year I was overseas for 75% of the GCC period and had no issues. I was walking in Europe in summer so it was fine.

We may not have the packs by the April lunch date but if we do I am sure we could arrange to carry one to Auckland.

On the broader issue we still need more people to have enough for a second team so, if anyone is still thinking about it, now is the time to commit.

Have just submitted a late entry - I got fuddled with dates while trying to work out if it was do-able.
I'm happy to be used as an emergency if it's too late to form/join a team

We still have a few places left to fill on the GCC teams for 2012, so perhaps we need an incentive, I am hoping to have my Royal Ambassador status renewed this year and suspect it was last week, if that's the case I am happy to give my referral certificate to one lucky winner who signs up for the GCC after this post, with the random draw to be done by the mod team should admin approve!
