As reported in The Australian today

Southeast Asian flights to improve the number of connections by an estimated 25 per cent. The airline will upgrade services on Airbus A330 flights to Asia that are expected to include the introduction of lie-flat seats in business class. Officials will also argue that the diversion of London-bound travellers through Dubai will see 40 per cent more seats available for travel to Asia.

By lie flat i assume that mean Skybed 2 :D which would suggest that the A330 current and comming from J* will be the regional plane.

Good to see that we will have plenty of seats 40% more but not sure what the base is...

Re: Airbus A330 flights expected to include the introduction of lie-flat seats in bus

Two problems. Firstly the Jet Star aircraft won't be coming in a hurry. Secondly the orginal batch needed floor strengthening to take the old skybed, so don't see that happening.

The one question I've had about Qantas' plan to continue to retire 747's and move the LHR flight through DXB is what a/c are they going to use to replace the 747's and change to A330 services to Asia. They need them next year. The 787 would have been the perfect answer being a smaller aircraft than an A330-300 but with better range. So it leaves the question what a/c will Qantas use to service Asia? (hmmm thinking maybe some ex EK ones refitted)

Re: Airbus A330 flights expected to include the introduction of lie-flat seats in bus

QF will get some aircraft freed up by not operating SIN to ADL and PER, both are on the cutting list as marginal with through traffic.

Re: Airbus A330 flights expected to include the introduction of lie-flat seats in bus

Hmmm, so more QF flights to South East Asia.... From just Sydney (or the East Coast)...

Re: Airbus A330 flights expected to include the introduction of lie-flat seats in bus

surely there is 3 or so spare 747's once FRA ends which they may use as well, in the short term

FRA cannot be serviced with the 9 left, while there may be a few spare when it happens, retirements will soon mean no spare 744 capacity.

Re: Airbus A330 flights expected to include the introduction of lie-flat seats in bus

SO more SkyBed IIs with their "droop" issue - how to make a lie flat/fully flat a regular flat seat

That's not what he was saying. He was saying the a/c freed up by NOT flying to FRA can be used elsewhere, but like you I would have thought the discontinuation of FRA would mean their exit from the fleet.

Where and when was that been announced?

QF have hinted at it in both the ACCC apps and Steve Creedys article today in the Australian, it make sense, the routes are barely breaking even now, if 40% of that traffic is Euro bound, then once the codeshares via EK happen, they are gone. EK can then move in, fly direct to PER and ADL and also open new business with codeshares from there to NZ to fully utilise the aircraft.

they may decide to keep them on to service SIN, 2 of them could do one daily each on mel-sin and syd-sin. it could be a temporary measure until other aircraft are found.

The story in the Oz today explicitly says no 747s to [-]Asia[/-] SIN.

Oh well I thought I read earlier at least NRT remained a 747 destination

Don't they use the phrase 'Fully Flat' when they mean Skybed2 ?

Re: Airbus A330 flights expected to include the introduction of lie-flat seats in bus

How about some premium whY on the 330s if they are going to be Asian focused????

Really, QF do need to get with the program - but it might just be too late! ;)

Oh you mean like the premium economy that SQ, TG, MH, EK, KE etc have on their flights to Asia?

But yeah it is a surprise that Qantas doesn't offer premium economy on their medium haul network for product consistency and to show the rest hows it's done.

Given the mooted installtion of Mk II skybeds, I would not be surprised if PE also finds it way into the international 330's.

If it was going to happen you think that QF would be telling us all - heavens they need as many good news stories as they can get.

I think they are still trying to work out how to cover the move of aircraft from Sin, FRA is a net gain of zero aircraft once the 747 fleet is down to 9.The BNE SIN 747 and SYD NRT services also need replacements soon.
