Just noticed this on the Qantas Club access page:

Note: From 26 December 2012 to 6 January 2013, our Business Lounges in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra will be closed for routine maintenance. During this time, our Platinum One, Platinum and Gold Frequent Flyers are invited to use our Qantas Clubs.

Eligibility and Access to The Qantas Club Lounges | Qantas

Not sure why all the Business lounges require maintenance for, but there you go....

I think "routine maintenance" means they'll be short staffed, and can't be bothered paying higher public holiday rates when most travellers are leisure travellers.

That is interesting. I wonder what exactly they are doing that requires them to be closed for that long.

Poorly worded announcement. Doesn't say what J pax should do. Also doesn't say it's dom lounges only, which you'd have to assume is the case.

I have heard that they are enhancing the self smashing glass windows in said lounges...

Seems like the "routine maintenance" line has been borrowed from Hilton's Executive Lounge closures...

Fortunately, I'm not travelling during these dates. I would hope that J lounge alcohol would be available to J/WP pax in the QP upon request, though I wouldn't hold my breath.

When did GOLD gain access to Jlounges?

Sounds like a re-fit is in the offering......I'm thinking this is a positive enhancement!

Bummer, I have a JASA status run then. Not that it makes a lot of difference but I am a bit disappointed. :(

I would have preferred the statement say "During this time, our Platinum One and Platinum Frequent Flyers are invited to use our Chairmans Lounges." :p

Who knows? 'Routine maintenance' means you're not going to be able to notice any difference at the end. Barring any very specific requirements there is IMHO little difference betwixt the J lounges and the QPs so numbers (potential overcrowding) aside I do not think it will make much difference. But it does provoke the cynical 'save money, close down awhile' thought (from me too). But on the positive side, maybe something bigger and brighter will emerge after the break, though I imagine that would've been announced in spades by now.

Tres annoyment! I am travelling between Canberra and Brisbane, via Sydney, during that period and was wanting to access the lounge with one's better half. I will bet that QP will not upgrade their offering during this period; no Greek yoghurt and dressed with museli flakes shattered lovingly by umpa lumpas! Instead, if the Perth QP is any indication -- the last time I went to a QP rather than a J lounge courtesy of my WPness -- I can look forward to curried mince on Tip Top bread. Dash.

I will assume that its saving money on staff penalty rates over the xmas & new year period unless we see some sort of meaningful upgrades to the J lounges after the closure.

WOuld be interested to see what has changed once they reopen.

Mmmm - I'll be in the MEL and probably the CBR J lounges on 25th December, so I'll ask the staff what's happening. And then I'll be in CBR again on the 27th. It's a yearly travel pattern for me and the J lounges are usually pretty empty.

I wonder if the CLs will close too?

Bugger, I'm flying on the 26th but maybe it will be a novelty to visit the QP!

Hopefully they will do something with the closure and not have disguised a cut costs, reduce staff mentality...

Will be flying MH during 25 Dec to 6 Jan the back home to see freshly cleaned? MEL/SYD/BNE all to be visited on 7th.

I was thinking of going on a few random flights during that time.

Guess I'll find other things to do. School holidays is exactly the time where I want the J lounges.

I am flying on the 26th but out of OOL. I'm glad they're open on the 25th though (flying out of SYD).
