Lowest QFF Account Numbers

I'm wondering when the QFF scheme started. I am a 142**** number and I joined just before the masses in Oct 95.

Anybody here in the really low numbers?

Was it free when you joined?

I sure do miss the old around-Australia-jaunt for 30k points.. those were the days!

Well I joined in Nov 93 (at least that's the date on my card) and my number is 373***, but I have no memory of whether I paid for it or not.

There must be a lot of people with a lower number than me though.

I joined Oct 1994: 062****. Mrs serfty July 1995 079****. Mini serfty April 1996 101****.

There are some regulars on this board who I have met who have 00***** numbers.

When I joined in 93 to the Qantas FF the cost was $20 my number is 180***. However I know some numbers are not issued in order.e.g. old FF numbers are re used if they are void. I have a good friend who joined in 1995( two years after me) via his business and his number is only 50***. He is not a Qantas club member either.

However my wife who joined last year number is 2,***,***. Could there be over 2,000,000 Qantas FF's?

I joined in 1999, and my number is 2,***,***. I also know people that joined a couple of years ago that are 3,***,***.

Would seem that they are no always in order, and that there may be gaps in the numbers that have been issued as well.

The FF numbers are not all the relevant to joining date. The current QF FF membership is a combination of those who joined the Qantas Frequent Flyer program, as well as those who were members of Australian Airlines FF program (and Flight Deck) and the Qantas Captains Club before the merger of the two airlines.

I have a 008xx_x membership number. When I joined Australian Airlines FF program in Sept 91 I was issued the number without the two leading zeros. When it TN became part of QF, I retained the old number and they added two leading zeros to my number to make it seven digits instead of the original 5 digits.

So there may well be people who were Flight Deck members or members of the earlier Qantas programs that have higher numbers who joined earlier than me.

I joined the Qantas Frequent Flyer program back in February 1989 and received my membership number 180xx.

I was a member of the Australian Airlines Flight Deck (member 00566xx) and as explained by NM, when it merged with QFF, I retained my AFD number (presumably there was a current AFD member with my QFF number).

From my accountant mind, the mind boggles as to how Qantas accrue for this?

I'd love to see the calculcations as to how much they are carrying on their books? And are they lowering the accrual after May 25?

Contingent liabilities don't have to be disclosed on the balance sheet until the adoption of international standards bambbbam2. Even then if they can't be reliably measured they only need be disclosed by way of note to the accounts. If you're so worried by it go to the investor reltions area of the Qantas website and check out the Annual financial report. I'm sure the method of calculation (if liabilites are disclosed) is right there in the notes to the accounts.

Personally I think that Qantas probably makes a profit out of FF points. After all for most things that you earn them on (other than flights of course) there is a third party PAYING for the privelege of you earning points. So the entry there is simply a debit to bank and then a credit to future FF benefits. Given that some people will lose these, or they will be degraded by program changes, Qantas probably doesn't need to accrue for those earned on flights.

What I don't understand in the present discount environment is why they don't offer MORE FF seats. Why sell a flight for $130 return when it is 20,000 FF points that they have sold for 2 cents each (ie $400)? The entry of DR FF liability CR Sales of $400 has to do more for the bottom line than flogging off loss leaders. Plus it would make for a hell of a lot more happy and therefore loyal FF.

In response to Karen's very informative answers I'm thinking the reason they need to promote the low cost fares is to do with the number of available people. There are many more people willing to pay the dollars for the seat than there are FF members willing to use their points ie they couldn't fill all of the seats by just relying on the [disenchanted?] FFs.

The thread about the new QFF membership software got me thinking about QFF account or membership numbers.

I was asked to make a booking for a friend a few years ago and got a bit cross with him on the phone as he was sure his number was only 4 digits (starting with a low number too, IIRC). I gave up asking and the web site accepted the number, so presumably it was OK.

Mine's 7 digits starting with 1 and my join date was April 1998.

So, my question is, did they start at 1 and what's the lowest QFF number you've seen?
