Not sure how useful this thread might prove to be, but I've been using the notes field in the AFF Flight Tracker to record JASAs, upgrades and op-ups. The purpose of this thread is to provide some analysis on the QF upgrades that I have requested.

Since July 2010, which is when my QF flying started, I've applied for 18 upgrades for myself and 2 for a family member for a total of 20.

  • 100% of them have come through.
  • 8 were international.
  • 12 were domestic.

  • 1 was W to J.

  • 1 was Y to W.

  • 18 were Y to J.

Interested to hear of others hit rates and analysis.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Impressive.. Don't think I've ever done domestic.
Lifetime (last 8 yes as Plat) am about 4 of 11 for QF Int. Worst strike rate on J to F at 1 of 5. Probably about 30% on domestic ODUs.
Since the upgrade changes am 1of1 Y to J.
Where is home base?

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

100% success! (1/1)
Y to J on QF9 as a WP a few months ago.
Not sure if I would do it again because over time, the Skybed Mk II droop will start to affect more and more seats. Mine was somewhat affected.
Never applied for an ODU.
Probably better off using those points for ASAs.

BNE is home for me. Only 1 of the domestic successes was an in-lounge ODU. All the others were requested online prior to the flight.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

I expect being bne based helps as j cabins have lower loads but still is very impressive

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

In the past 2 years, out of 11 international upgrade requests I scored 10/11, mostly MEL-LAX. Only unsuccessful was QF128.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

I think there are a lot of factors to consider including route and time of year of the travel as these will significantly impact success. The new processing right up to departure (? Last 12 months or so??) seems to have had an impact too.

Yes, quite possibly. I think all the dom sectors are BNE-SYD and vv. Int sectors have been HKG-SYD, HKG-BNE, SYD-CHC

EDIT: and SIN-BNE.

since the change have a 100% rate as WP before change 0% as WP

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

100% success with me.
2 domestic (BNE-SYD) - yes not normally worth it on a short flight, but these ones meant I could get home hours earlier and not get the middle Y seat!
3 international, all from O or similar class with the upgrade promos
- LHR-SIN Y-J
- SIN-MEL Y-W
- BNE-SIN Y-J for 2 pax on a .br special :)

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

I have an upgrade success rate of around 0/51 in 2013, thanks to 90% of bookings being in deep discount. Yet to convince company that they should pay for a higher fare class just so I have a chance to upgrade.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

5/5 domestic success this year

3/4 international success (2 W to J; 1 Y to J)

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

I am a first time WP flying to Shanghai in April in "O" class - I know these class fares are not normally upgradeable but noticed on my recent QFF email newsletter than some Asian itineraries in economy are going to be upgradeable as a special during January..wondering what my chances are for April - I have logged into my account and still says not upgradeble..can I ask at the airport ? Is for two pax both WP's

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Well, I'm now 21 from 21, with another Y- to J upgrade on QF128 :).

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Have only requested an upgrade once, on QF35 from economy (Y) to business, and it was successful.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

2/2 in 2013

Will QF always fill an empty seat in a higher cabin if there is a seat and an outstanding upgrade request?

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

2/2 to and from the US a couple of years ago for 2 pax. This is when we were both only QFF Silver too.
Was upgraded from Y to Y+ SYD-DFW but luckily got J seats.
Then from JFK-SYD Y to J.

Never attempted a domestic upgrade.

Apart from the occasional campaign there is no way to do an upgrade ex Sydney! some overseas ports will do a cash upgrade.
