Qantas Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Been platinum for a few years now - haven't had a domestic op up. In fact in 16 years of being gold and plat only once had a domestic op up and that was in school holidays when y was totally overbooked. Have requested our first ever points upgrades in July (syd-lax And lax-syd) but not hopeful....

My first ever request for a points upgrade from J to F was earlier this month on June 5 on QF11 SYD-LAX and was lucky enough for it to be accepted 24 hours out. I applied a month or so out so don't give up yet. BTW Degustation menu was fabulous.

On another note, I have received a few complimentary upgrades form PE to J on ATW tickets but it has always been with BA probably when they have been overbooked.

Thanks for the encouragement, but it is for 2 people, so a big ask! I am keeping myself very negative about our chances, so that I won't be disappointed. :)

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

How do you opt in for gate upgrades?

You can only opt in for PNR with a single passenger. You can tick the box after requesting the upgrade online.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Not sure how useful this thread might prove to be, but I've been using the notes field in the AFF Flight Tracker to record JASAs, upgrades and op-ups. The purpose of this thread is to provide some analysis on the QF upgrades that I have requested.

Since July 2010, which is when my QF flying started, I've applied for 18 upgrades for myself and 2 for a family member for a total of 20.

  • 100% of them have come through.
  • 8 were international.
  • 12 were domestic.

  • 1 was W to J.

  • 1 was Y to W.

  • 18 were Y to J.

Interested to hear of others hit rates and analysis.

100% all-round.

I have read this many a time, but when I put in for an upgrade for 2 pax recently the check box was there, so I ticked it. The upgrade came through in plenty of time so I can't confirm whether an at gate upgrade would have happened or not.

Being obsessively obedient I didn't tick the box when I put in my upgrade request as there were 2 of us - later on I thought that was silly but couldn't work out how to change it without cancelling the request and I didn't want to do that in case I slipped back in a queue. I agree that if the box is there why not tick it....

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Planning on going from IAD-DFW-SYD in Jan 15 - have S fare ticket in Discount Econo.
I'm only a QF Silver.

1. Is it a pipe dream to hope for an upgrade to business, as I'm pretty low on the status tree?
2. Are points upgrades good use of points or is there a better use of QF points?

Thanks for your help!!

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Generally best use of points as no extra fuel fines etc...

Next best is the RTW tickets but the extras on those are growing, particularly in Y.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

So far 100% success rate on QF127/128 with A388

4/4 Y+ to J
1/1 J to F

though that may change once they stop flying A388 for that route....

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Actually I am interested to find out the upgrade success rate for QF1/QF2 for Y/Y+ to J for the SYD-DXB-SYD legs?

Anyone has any luck in getting an upgrade? (and whats your QF FF status?)

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

What are my chances of a Y to J upgrade with 11 available J seats 4 days out from QF107 SYD-JFK? I am QC Silver.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Had success recently with the J to F upgrade QF9 for myself and 4 family members. What an experience the F package is, service and comfort were fantastic.

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

Had partial success on recent us trip. Qf7 upgrade to PE at gate :-) and then noting on QF12 to J or PE return :-(

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

I'm only bronze with Qantas (will be silver after this trip) and just got successfully upgraded from Y to PE for QF93 tomorrow. Didn't think there was much chance of getting it so am pretty stoked. Also came through early enough for me to request my meal (and get the priority queue for check in tomorrow).

So fellow bronze frequent flyers - don't despair, there is always a chance you'll be successful!

Re: QF Upgrade Success Rate

My first upgrade request with QF was successful! I am QC Silver.

QF107 SYD-JFK Y to J at T-23. I got allocated seat 1K - how would others rate this seat (in refurb 744)? I guess I don't really have a choice to change - was hoping to score 5J, but no luck after calling QF.

No SMS received to notify of upgrade, just noticed it in MBB. Not sure if this is usual, but the flight initially showed as cancelled, then a new flight segment appeared showing the upgraded travel class, before sorting itself out soon after and showing as a single segment SYD-JFK in Business(U) with Upgrade Status 'Confirmed'.

Very excited for my first long-haul flight in J!
