The Five Stans of The Silk Road (2023)

Looks great! You don't like Iran? Persia is a beautiful country full of friendly, welcoming people. The government is nutty but they don't have enough democracy to give it a shove out the door. which they would in a heartbeat if given the chance.

Journey to the Land of Flying Barges

Thanks! My record on these things isn't great. Usually I start out with copious instalments full of photographs and details and gradually run out of puff as time, energy, and internet diminishes.

Journey to the Land of Flying Barges

Finnair A350 (By Steve Lynes from Sandshurst, United Kingdom CC BY 2.0) As it turned out… Finnair was one of the airlines mentioned, and yes, they flew into Edinburgh. I could book a return flight from Bangkok via Helsinki for less than A$4 000. This would give me lie-flat seats for most of the...

Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

I feel your pain! Not that I need any more Scotch but Benriach isn't bad. I might poke my nose in when I have my annual run-away-shivering-from-Canberra escape.

    A bit of humour

I was asked - on Quora - the following. Q. How often do pilots and flight attendants have affairs? A. I have a friend who is a Qantas captain, so I checked with him. Not as often as you might think, is the answer. Certainly not more than two or three times on a 14-hour trans-Pacific flight, he...

What are you reading right now?

Weeel, I like a good hardcopy, especially when there are images or maps, but I spent most of my life buying increasingly bigger houses to store my books in and let's face it most of them get read once and then set on the shelf. Reading to a child pretty much demands a hardcopy and my daughter...

    A flight a day ...

Looking at your sunny shot of the harbour at Monaco - one crammed full of superyachts - reminds me of possibly the most tense time in my travelling career. We finished 18 days aboard the Oceania Riviera and booked a limo. Stood around for the best part of an hour with our bags looking for our...

What are you reading right now?

My current read is "Breakthrough Advertising" by Eugene Schwartz, a classic and penetrating look at copywriting. I note references to Napoleonic naval fiction above, in particular the works of Patrick O'Brian. I have spent the past twenty-five years of my life in an online discussion forum -...

Business Class- FINNAIR Bangkok to Rome from $1,934 USD

I checked on the QF calculator. It should be 120 SC each way BKK-HEL and 60 each way HEL-FCO. I'm doing a similar trip on AY in a few weeks. I'm counting on this trip and a bit of other flying to lift me back into the land of lounge access. On that note, lounges and priority boarding aren't the...

Potential item theft in checked baggage on VA domestic

I like the photography. Much like my reflexive photographing a rental car at beginning and end. As for the cable tie, far be it for me to claim a precise insight into the criminal mind but if I were possessed of limited time to select bags I'd look for ones with some indication that the owner...

    A bit of humour

I drove through the US a while back. A lotta servos have ungendered disabled toilets with change tables. That solves a lot of problems.

I have my credit card and loyalty card ready to go. If I'm in Aldi it's superefficient. Love that place, but I pay with a debit card there.

Yeah. Just zip it up again. So long as there's no damage to the teeth, the thingum zips it back up nicely. Besides, even if it doesn't, they won't really care that much.

    What cheeses me off

That's just plain rude. I spent five years as a cabbie and if I got a call from someone I couldn't put off - like the boss or the wife - I'd apologise. The passenger hires the whole car including the driver. If they wanted to yak, they yakked.

The OP indicated a zipper. No point locking a bag with a zipper. You can just stick a biro straight through the zip and it opens right up.

KLM boss goes undercover as a flight attendant

Perhaps she wanted to get some current experience at the sharp end so she could relate better to those doing the work? If she'd been doing it for the publicity she would have had a cameraman and PR team with her. And she could hardly keep it from the crew.

Check in: BNE-SYD, overnight, then SYD-JNB

Speaking as an ex-night cabbie in Canberra, as soon as the last passenger from the last plane of the night - the midnight VA from OOL, back in the day - had left the terminal any cabs remaining were out of there, chewing sour grapes for the wasted time. No point hanging around when there's no...

    Ask The Pilot

Larger airliners are one thing but I notice that in the Dash-8 there are often infants crying during the descent which I take to be the result of pressure changes affecting their ears. Not too long ago FAs used to hand out lollies to suck but I haven't seen this happening for a while. Do...
