I had the same problem last year on QF1. Even HBA call centre couldn’t help, so I just stretched my legs for an hour at SIN instead.

My understanding is that after May 1st all monthly subscrptions will go up ( including current ones ).The only way to avoid this increase is to pay for a yearly subscription before May 1st.

You can now earn Avios on China Southern ( but not tier points unless with a BA flight number) They are rumoured to be joining Oneworld according to HFP. Not sure Cathay will like that ...
