I did it twice last year in Y, per-syd-dfw-elsewhere in the states. Both times I chose it over the slightly shorter LAX/SFO legs over the Pacific because it was the most appealing overall schedule, especially time given the timezone changes. I do think that the schedule is a big factor...

Did you pay in points or cash? I recently made a points booking, but paid for the offset in cash. The leaf appeared when the points for the offset transaction appeared on my statement.

I thought it closed 10 minutes out as well! I've certainly considered the time on the screen as the time boarding starts, not finishes. Indeed if that's the case then they need to make boarding calls in the lounge far enough in advance to allow walking time.

When did you get to the gate? This is what frustrates me about early boarding, most people (including myself) are very glad to for anything reasonable that encourages leaving on time but off boarding a passenger at the start of the set boarding time is not okay.
