I got comped Gold this week (my end date is 30 June). I was well short of requalifying so was waiting to get my Silver card but a Gold one arrived in the mail, with the letter saying they had comped me. Doing my happy dance :)

That could be the case. When I did my trip 24K wasn't available until close to the date, I was just lucky enough to grab it when it opened up (I'm Gold as well).

I did 24K a couple of years ago travelling LAX-MEL and it was great. Plenty of room in front of you even if a few people gather for a bit. Would definitely do it again.

My first overseas trip was in Y from Brisbane to San Francisco, way back in 1986. I recall it cost around $1500, which seemed like a huge amount at the time.

Don't forget that September is school holidays, if you were searching during those times it's always harder to find award seats I believe. I've done several awards in recent years MEL-LAX and not had any problems so long as I grab them at 353 days out, or close to.
