I concur with the commandments.

Nice list, thanks Foreigner for sharing that.

I disagreed with all of them (except for tell the truth perhaps).

And I hate the current fad of making lists of everything.

My 10 commandments for travel journalism?:

1. Don't make lists.
2. Don't make lists.
3. Don't make lists.

5. Don't make lists.

I only agreed with one of them!

Only one! Whilst the list is a little frivilous, almost all of them are just plain simple common sense and/or politeness. I'm interested in the one you chose. And why the others you disagree with.

Which one?

While I don't agree with much that's published on traveller.com.au, I did actually agree with the majority of that list!

Certainly with you Mattg, Whilst lists on travel blogs and sites are way over done, this was good. Well written too.

Reminds Austman not to make lists again!

Well here it is in a bit more detail:

1. THOU SHALT WORSHIP ALL MANNER OF GODS AND IDOLS

No.

2. THOU SHALT TRAVEL SLOWLY

No. Unless you want to. It shouldn't be a commandment.

3. THOU SHALT, WHEREVER POSSIBLE, HAVE A CRACK AT THE LOCAL LINGO

Absolutely NO.

4. THOU SHALT EAT STREET FOOD

Depends. But it shouldn't be a commandment. So No.

5. THOU SHALT TRAVEL WITH A CONSCIENCE

What's travel got to do with it? So no! Have one all the time!

6. THOU SHALT TREAT THYSELF

On top of the travel? I mean you've already treated yourself to that haven't you? Just make it work. It shouldn't be a commandment.

7. THOU SHALT COVET THY NEIGHBOUR'S HOUSE

No.

8. THOU SHALT TUCK THINE SMARTPHONE AWAY IN THE FOLDS OF THINE GARMENTS

No.

9. THOU SHALT TALK TO STRANGERS

No. Unless you want to.

10. THOU SHALT TELL THE TRUTH, NOT BOAST AND NOT BLOG

Yes.

(and I really do hate the current fad/trend to use lists) :)

A different mix of yes and no from Austman:

1. THOU SHALT WORSHIP ALL MANNER OF GODS AND IDOLS

Yes, I love learning about other cultures and religions when I'm travelling.

2. THOU SHALT TRAVEL SLOWLY

No. I like flying actually; don't like cruising and like cycling even less (when going from A to B). I'm more a destination, not the journey type.

3. THOU SHALT, WHEREVER POSSIBLE, HAVE A CRACK AT THE LOCAL LINGO

A little bit - enough to be polite.

4. THOU SHALT EAT STREET FOOD

No. Unless guaranteed digestible and non stomach-upsetting.

5. THOU SHALT TRAVEL WITH A CONSCIENCE

Apparently having a 'conscience' means paying the carbon offset scam. No thanks.

6. THOU SHALT TREAT THYSELF

Again, a bit. Even though Duty free isn't always cheaper, its an excuse to buy something you wouldn't normally be able to justify.

7. THOU SHALT COVET THY NEIGHBOUR'S HOUSE

No.

8. THOU SHALT TUCK THINE SMARTPHONE AWAY IN THE FOLDS OF THINE GARMENTS

No.

9. THOU SHALT TALK TO STRANGERS

If it suits them and me. I hate people talking at me.

10. THOU SHALT TELL THE TRUTH, NOT BOAST AND NOT BLOG

No. Completely antithetic to AFF. I like to write and read trip reports and if anyone here travels First, we are all going to hear about it!

Just an observation, but I think you are missing the slightly tongue-in-cheek nature of the article. Perhaps its the word 'commandment' that is geting to you.

But, otherwise, I have to ask.
....you won't try at least to say hello in the native language of a country you are visiting? Seriously!

Although my earlier post is a mix of jest/seriousness this needs a bit of a special mention:

3. THOU SHALT, WHEREVER POSSIBLE, HAVE A CRACK AT THE LOCAL LINGO

It's certainly OK for polite phrases. But, if you are a native English speaker you might just look like a complete dork if you try too much beyond that. And the person you are talking to can become very frustrated.

I've been in the situation 1,000s of times now. I used to agree with the article long ago. I don't any more. I've been told off too many times for even trying! Admittedly those times were not in touristy encounter situations.

I agree, it can be frustrating at times. But, then again, I personally feel these moments are one of the best times to be a traveller. So, I have to disagree.

(p.s.- I would have never met my partner if not for one of these moments, so I'm slightly biased. Long story :) )

Re:

3. THOU SHALT, WHEREVER POSSIBLE, HAVE A CRACK AT THE LOCAL LINGO

I remember once while waiting for a local train in northern Europe, a local asked me a question. I had recently taken local language lessons and totally understood the question. I replied in the local language. I was then told by the local that I urgently needed to seek psychiatric help! (I understood that bit too ... :( )

But I've also been told off by work colleagues and new friends in many countries. Too frustrating for them!

Learning polite phases is fine. But don't push it!

I really could not agree to much of the list at all ... maybe about 30 years ago in the dreams of backpackers ...

Where is, "Thou shall travel light...and still leave room for your techie toys!"

I don't agree with any, also 1. THOU SHALT WORSHIP ALL MANNER OF GODS AND IDOLS is very wrong. Really people can have any Gods they want just don't tell me about it, people who knock on my door you know who you are. It's like non medical dietary requirements, I really don't care about your religious or life choice, I am happy for you to eat whatever you like just don't expect me to do the same, generally eat whatever is put in front of me where ever I go.

10 commandments of travel?
How about just the one - do whatever you feel like, just don't piss off the locals doing it.
