As shared today over on Executive Traveller: New Qantas Green frequent flyer tier adds more points, status credits
I guess we'll need to come up with a new acronym for the status add on... perhaps I can look forward to to being a QFF WP PC LTG -CO2

To be launched in early 2022, the Green tier will sit alongside the exiting Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum One membership levels in the Qantas Frequent Flyer scheme.

It will also come with its own serve of bonus Qantas Points and status credits, which will be activated after members complete five sustainable activities per year across six categories: flying, travel, lifestyle, sustainable purchases, reducing impact and 'giving back’.

Cheers,
Matt.

So this basically helps them hit their net-zero goal by claiming a carbon offset instead of actually reducing fossil fuel burn – which as an airline would be nearly impossible, etc?
Yep - that's how a lot of industries will get there... buy the credits or offsets, including in this case, from their own clients

It will be interesting to see the detail, to determine whether this genuinely makes offsetting your activities more accessible. I would think that for businesses it will be cheaper to purchase offsets directly vs via suppliers such as Qantas, electricity retailers, etc but that may not be as easy for households.

When the rubber hits the road I would assume I will not earn Qantas points unless my solar system is purchased via a Qantas partner.

Business, First travel is usually said to have a higher carbon footprint so it will be interesting to see how this is marketed.

Wonder if any past carbon offsets done when booking a flight ticket would be considered? I pay for the carbon offset for all my flights (VA or QF) ... like every time I fly

I have purchased many $1 carbon offsets in the past to trigger Westpac CC lounge passes... 🤣

I'm keen to follow this and see how/what is implemented next year.

Few bonus points and SC are always welcome and if they come with a genuine benefit for the planet even better.

We are currently building our first home and have taken a lot of effort to go green. We've also paid a deposit for a big solar system to be installed after handover. It would be a pleasant surprise to get some pts or SC for it.

Not sure how the personal economics of this work out-cursing my big household 😉. Also assuming already installed solar will count-the big roof makes for big savings

Agree and the rewards are a bonus.

As long as people aren't intentionally buying wine or hotel stays to get the rewards, it would be a net positive. Because whether they're offset or not, consumption that otherwise wouldnt've occurred is probably a net negative for the planet

I would hope so but I am unsure how that works out for Qantas from a business perspective

Buying wine to earn status credits would be net positive if it reduces the need for status runs.
