The flight actually went relatively quickly, time flies when travelling with a little one!

It wasn't long before we started to see the barren landscape out the window

Upon landing I spent a stack of time taking in all the random types I'm not used to on the he East coast, I loved seeing a VA F100 and QF B717 lining up, one after the other.

Europcar were nice enough to give me an A3 for our WA portion, I'm enjoying burning around in it but think I might of almost preferred an X-trail.

It's time for a sleep now and more adventures in Perth tomorrow

In the vein of good AFF'er Erk, I shall be updating my latest trip almost live and filling in with more comprehensive posts as I get time to process photos from my actual camera and write well.

With that little intro out of the way it's time to begin our next trip, a 3 week venture taking us to WA, CNS and Thursday Island. The trip ended up this way in true AFF fashion, why fly direct when you can connect!

We'll have to compare notes & I'll have to go back to the start of your TR.

Looking forward to hearing how you go on the transcon on the 330 on the way back.

I agree...great photos and a good read

I also know you are really travelling to find a suitable steak restaurant :)

Just stumbled on this Nate , great read ...will be looking forward to the updates . Enjoy .

Agree totally with others here bass_ke, some of your images are great ..... you clearly have a natural eye and must keep you camera at hand .....itst always those 'quirky very day life' pics that hit the spot for me. As well as some great 'framing' your getting.

I love your shot of the AT - it almost looks 'inviting' but them we all know better.

IMG_4309.jpg

Could I ask what sort of gear you are using ? Might see you on the runway threshold fence line at OOL one day.

You have a major talent for taking excellent photos!

Thank you! I'm finally starting to be able to get out and play a little more these days!

As long as it remains an A330 I'll be happy!

Thank you good major!

Even if I did eat meat, I'm sure a decent steak in Perth would cost more than the flight home!

I'll find the best steakhouse on Thursday Island for you in a couple of weeks! :P

Thanks for checking It out Grant!

I was going to process some actual camera shots tonight but I caught just a tad too much sun out at the pinnacles today!

Hey clivem, thanks!

I really must put more work into my composition for 'formal' shots, it is however usually the spontaneous candid shots that I like the best as well!

I use an R-strap rather than a conventional camera strap. It allows me to carry the camera easily and less visibly, it tucks into the hip quite nicely. It's also very accessible. The setup does tend to get knocked around a wee bit more so I usually use a hood for protection more than anything else

Just sitting behind the hand

I currently use

Canon 550D
Canon EF-S 10-22mm
Canon EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8
Canon EF-S 55-250
Sigma 50mm F/1.4

The body is getting and I'll be looking to upgrade within the next year, it's still doing a great job though and truth be told he 450D we used as a second body did nearly as well as it. For the last little while I've been putting $$$$ into glass, I believe it to be a better investment.

I normally only take two lenses out at a time as I like using a small bag. The 10-22mm and 17-55mm see the most use at the moment. The 50mm is too long on a cropped sensor for capturing too much of my little one and that 55-250mm only comes out if I'm going plane spotting, bush walking or knowing I'll be seeing some wildlife.

The 10-22mm is quite versatile but the wide end can get some amazing shots, albeit a little distorted.

Also good for interiors and tight spots

Both the 17-55 and 50 are great for low light and pin sharp. The 17-55mm is pretty spot on through its whole focal length and the 50mm creates dreamy bokeh

Be sure to say hi if you see me out at OOL! I'll be sporting my scanner and Usually have my little one in tow!

Day 2, a huge day! One I'm probably going to end very soon as I'm dead tired!

Little miss bass_ke is still on east coast time and was up at 0430, not all bad! It meant we were able to get out bright and early for a trip 200km away to the pinnacles before it got too warm! It was also a good excuse to give the A3 that europcar upgraded us too a decent run.

All of my photos of the day are on the laptop and I'm too tired to do anything with them tonight! Let's just so we had an amazing day and didn't get back to Perth till about 1630, just in time to enjoy the view!

Tomorrow should be a wee bit quieter and I should get some photos processed!

Any recommendations for fun things in between Perth and Bunbury?

Nate

Day 3, busting out of Perth.

Today was the day to head south, our main chunk of time here in WA was going to be spent in the south and today we were heading for Bunbury.

The day started with cashing in a PP breakfast cert and enjoying what was actually quite a decent meal, highly recommended! It was after that, whilst I was chasing corella's around with my little one that I realised that Perth was starting to grow on me.

ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1393507247.655680.jpg

We spent a little bit of time this morn watching the QF press conference, even SWMBO was quite interested in the results. From someone who held no interest in the industry to somehow who can listen to Joyce prattle on for a while is quite an epic change, I think I'm corrupting her!

Checkout went very smoothly, only valet parking is available at the CP Perth so I thought I'd call up to give the concierge a heads up that we were checking out, just in case it was busy. Not only did he bring the car around, someone collected our bags and when we got downstairs they were in the car which was parked right at the entrance, ready to go. Is this a usual valet parking perk? I've never used it before and felt very pleased with the service!

A brief stop for snacks and fuel saw us hit mandurah around mid morning, just enough time for our little one to have a play in the park before setting off again.

We took the rest of the afternoon easy and enjoyed the last bit of our run down to Bunbury. I seems an odd place, feels like there is a transient population and that people get quite Bored, the views however are stunning, especially at sunset.

Tonight see's us at our first choice hotels property since quite a while ago, i want to be back at an ihg property where status can sometimes at least make A little difference! Overall the property isn't bad but is showing age..

A couple of shots from the pinnacles yesterday, including the crazy little bear that travels alongside her Ma and Da. Hats and shoes were no longer wanted, just as well we were there early!

Another big day on the road, no more big drives are on the cards for the rest of the week fortunately!

A couple of quick snaps thus far today

Early morning orchard run near Ballingup, I was tempted to pick some pears!

Right now, relaxing at the BW Pemberton, listening to Galah's and Magpie's

Now, a couple more photo's from previous days if I may.

View from our room at the CP PER

Bunbury sunset.

Some side notes, as Erk has noticed recently, VA Points and SC's are posting very quickly. Ours were there by the next day, IHG isn't so quick as seems to be the norm. Our returning flights to the East coast have stuck with the A330 for the PER - SYD leg and We remain the pax in the J Cabin for the E190 Leg to CNS, let's hope both things stay that way. I know most aren't a fan of the E190 J cabin but every time I've travelled (Excepting 1 time) we've been the only ones aboard and told by the CSM to spread out, that makes things entertaining for an Aviation keen child. It's also the last time we'll probably travel J as a family unit until at least October in the US as little miss bass_ke will be on her own childs ticket by the time we return from this current trip.

Now that we've got that sorted let's get onto today!

This was always going to be the big one, Bunbury - Walpole/Valley of the Giants - Pemberton. It ended up being just a tad over 400km in total.

The day started by checking out of the Quality Inn Lord Forrest. Overall the place wasn't great, and as with a lot of things in WA it was overpriced. The Choice Privilege's program that I status match into at Platinum Elite provided absolutely no benefits, althought nothing was expected!

A quick coffee was had on our way out of Bunbury and we wound our way into some really quite pretty Apple and Pear Orchards. This part of the country get's more amazing the deeper we drive into it. Getting into Donnybrook nice and early we noticed the biggest playground I've ever seen, it was awesome for our little one to get out and have a run about. Donnybrook also provided some stamps and postcards for us, sending a postcard daily has been a tradition we've had when holidaying with our bubba since her first adventure at 6 weeks old. We wrote a quick blog entry which you can find below

Postcard a day and other odd travel habits | My Little Earth

We had a small stop in Balingup for another coffee and for a look around in this very cute little town

Travelling onward took us onward straight to Walpole with only a quick stop or two on the way to refresh and get attacked by carnivorous man-eating flies, why me? I'm supposed to be an animal friend, spared from the chaos of the animal uprising (It's been a long tiring day and I'm still recovering from the horrors of the flies and watching the oldest truck in history blow a tire from my wooden balcony in Pemberton. The truck, with a tray full of probably illegally felled trees proceeded up the hill with said blown tire breaking down and then with the rim making sparks on the ground)

The Ultrawide got a workout today, I don't usually ride shotgun but was more than happy to oblige!

I absolutely adore the open road, it helps even more when it's this pretty!

Walpole provided us with more nutrition and a visit to the centre of information excellence to gather brochures and tickets for the valley of giants. Our visit was in the mid afternoon, and felt a good time with not too many people about. The walk itself is quite enjoyable, especially the swaying motion of the walkway.

All that was left for the day was to get to Pemberton, an easy 2 or so hour drive rough some more lovely and dominating forest.

Check Inn at the Best Western was easy, I think I may have gotten an upgrade as recognition of BW Diamond Status, I'm not sure though! The promised keysleeve however was not provided, I was tempted to go back and hassle the poor overworked Reception lady in a most DYKWITIA (Don't you know who I think I am) manner.

I leave you tonight tired, but fulfilled after another big day in this big countries South-west. Hopefully the hounds that appear to be rounding up the towns drunks will go to sleep shortly and I'll get off this balcony and sleep well. Tomorrow brings a short hop up to Margaret River and Augusta.

And now whilst I enjoy this crisp morning in Pemberton, a couple for the Gunzell's and Foamers ( did I learn those terms on the train trip?)

Yesterday led us out of Pemberton

ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1393719190.674998.jpg

And along caves rd from Pr Leeuwin in the south

ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1393718962.283151.jpg

To around Gracetown, just outside of Margaret River

ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1393719105.287763.jpg

I'm loving the beaches here,
Considering I'm usually somewhere between Kirra and Byron Bay I think that's a big call!

Margaret River itself wasn't what I was expecting, the towns surrounding however I love!

We rolled up at the quality inn Margaret River for the night and thus far are having a great stay, it's been quite recently renovated. The staff here are amazing!

This though highlights the inconsistencies with Choice hotels, I payed more in bunbury for a quality inn with no inclusions and a "beater" of a room.

Today takes us marketeering and out to the busselton aero display!
