He's just pulled off a great pass past Alonso to sit in 2nd place behind Vettel who looks unstoppable already with a 9 second lead.

Yep he's driving great and really good too see.

Interesting that webber is flying home straight after the race and not even staying overnight...

Thankfully he was able to get back into 2nd after a shocking pit stop by RBR.

Just have to chuckle with pit stops like that hah

I feel like I must be the only Australian up watching this! After the race back to bed for an hour then up for work! Ugh

I wonder if the stuff up was staged to close the gap between Webber and Vettel as a parting gift. Webber is now closing in on Vettel... Could it be a scripted last minute pass right at the end for Webber to win? ;)

I'd be very surprised if they gifted webber the win and even more surprised if he accepted it!!

Slipped back a bit now so perhaps not. At least with current positions it will allow Webber to finish 3rd in the championship thanks to Hamilton dropping back.

As always I stayed awake for the race. midnight start Perth time so not as bad as last week which was 3am!

Great race, plenty of excitement. I'm sure we will have one hell of a 2014 campaign with the new powertrains. Will make things very interesting.

Couldn't sum up the words here about Mark...really looking forward to seeing him racing in WEC next year, it is a very underrated championship and has incredibly exciting racing.

To think you I was watching the podium approx 2hrs ago and I've since been back to bed, got up ready for work and now in the office. Needless to say there was no gym session this morning!

WEC is going to be good I think and it will suit Mark well, nowhere near as much travel and media pressure etc

I recommend everyone check out the interview on Peter Windsors youtube channel with Mark from Friday on the way to the circuit, a good watch.

I've avoided this thread this morning as I have just watched the race (recorded so I could sleep). A great race and a good result for Mark to get into third in the driver's championship. Daniel certainly has some big shoes to fill.

Indeed a great interview, I watched it before the race last night. Candid, open and honest - the traits that most will miss Mark for.

Also check his personal website - Mark Webber, F1 driver for Red Bull Racing. F1 news and views. Mark Webber - as it has a good diary type thing where he has/is looking back at his career from the start.

just in case anyone is booking for 2014................flight prices have all gone up as of 1st December. we fly down on wednesday so not to bad, but having to utilise Virgin Points to get home on the monday back to sydney. not even Y seats left to redeem, only J.
note to self............remember to book in November like i usually do!

I assume that you are talking about flying to the Melbourne F1 race in 2014? What else is on in Melb and Sydney around 14th-16th March - no school holidays around there, are there that many F1 fans out there?

On a more general F1 note - thank god the 2nd half of season 2013 is over, but we shouldn't forget how entertaining the first half of the season was until Red Bull came to grips with the Pirelli tyres or Pirelli gimped the tyres for the other teams (depending on your point of view), certainly the tyres were the wild card in the first half of the season. Also seemed to be the year that Grosjean, Hulkenberg and Ricicardo and a few other rookies all showed signs of massive improvement despite the dominance of the Red Bull car in the second half of the season.

yes, i think there are that many fans. i usually book the plane tickets in Novemberand have never had probs before. you ought to see Tullamarine on the monday after the race, it is packed to the roof with F1 fans.
the only way to get a cheap plane ticket now is with a Qantas package

Thanks for the info - I imagine that the first race in the future that I go to may either be in Malaysia or Bahrain, and from the sounds of it - may be cheaper than going to the Melbourne race!

Being based in Sydney, Malaysia is much cheaper for me.

My last years cost:
Flights - ~$500 - Air Asia last yr
Tickets - ~ $100 - K1 Grandstand early bird - views of main straight, turns 1,2,4
Accom - ~ $350 - 3 nights at combo of Hilton and Doubletree
Transport - $100 - could have been cheaper using train/bus connections but I split a cab to/from with a few people

If booking now I reckon I would be spending a lot more on almost all of those items in Melbourne.

yes, quite agree moa999 thats why we go to Malaysia too. using Enrich points with the 50% redemption off this week flying J. ROyal Bintang hotel only approx 60.00 plus a night. early bird tic for the tower on last corner. much cheaper than melbourne.
we don't even take Mr. KLN, he says its too hot. we are 3 generations of myself, my mother and my 18yo daughter, and then turn it into a bonding weekend too.....plus about the 12 others that go with us as well
