Got my official email notification yesterday ...

I'm in !!

Bit concerned about the requirement to have a full and complete itinerary by 1st. December !!

My travel partner hasn't even applied for a passport yet, yet alone not having settled on airfares and accommodation ...
Fantastic - glad to hear! I suppose the requirement is because time is running out and they need to make sure someone is definitely going so they can go down to the next person on the waiting list if not. Hopefully if you can demonstrate that you are genuinely making arrangements you will get some extra time.

Congratulations Rick!!
Good luck with all the decisions.

Sent an email off to DVA ( section managing the 'arrangements' ) ...

Expressed my disappointment with the limited time allotted to 'confirm' each Pass holder's acceptance ...

You must have all air + land travel confirmed ( booked and paid for ) by 1st. December 2014.

My travel partner hasn't got a passport as yet ( not even lodged an application ! )

No extensions possible, they said when I telephoned today ...

Jeez, the timeframe they've set is ridiculous. As a first rounder I had something like 7 months to answer a few very basic mandatory questions - no need for confirmed bookings etc.

VA might be getting nervous the stands will appear empty!

Agreed, pretty p&@s poor in fact. Hope you can work it out in time. What do round 3 people get - 1 week?

military History tours were heavily involved with DVA over these issues and in fact were just about thrown out of one meeting because they pretty much told them they were all idiots - I have many newsletters from them on the talks - make really amusing reading. They seemed to believe that lottery winners would all go and given what appears to be a reasonably high % of refusals from the first winners they probably are starting to worry that there won't be enough time for multiple rounds.....

Got a reply from DVA ...

No extension possible at all.

Made it quite clear ...

No confirmed bookings by 09:00 hrs. on 1st. December - Pass will be revoked !

And if there is a third round there is no way that those people will have all the requirements in place, then add into the mix delays over Christmas - I think they should have been stricter with the first round and they wouldn't be in the possible stew they are in right now.

With the very real probability that a fair chunk of the first rounders will pull out at the 11th hour - it's not hard to see this turning into a right royal cough-up. The mandatory Q's/commitment for the first round acceptors can only be described as basic...

I received a cruise flyer today. That commemorative cruise that was fully booked out 2 years ago and super expensive - a friend paid $30k and it wouldn't have been a suite - is now offering a 35% reduction in fares. Seems it's not just the land trip that's causing issues.

I thought the cruises were very expensive when they came out, many booked prior to the announcement of the ballot, now those that have tickets can't get off(I believe only one ship has docking rights at the peninsula) and those that booked thinking they would be anchored just off shore, so potentially being able to see the service are now aware that they won't be anywhere near the peninsula, it's a lot of money to pay to be a few Kim's away from the action.
in regards to acceptance of ballot tickets, yes the original ballot winners very very lucky to have 7 months, however, we were required to have confirmed flight details, accomodation or tour operator information etc entered to accept our position

There were a whole bunch of Q's however, very few were mandatory .... this is how I read the web-form http://www.australianfrequentflyer....ot-100th-anniversary-55856-3.html#post1110548

We were among those who booked many years before the ballot was even thought of! Our ship has docking rights and we remain happy even though we won't be at the "official" service, our guys are holding a dawn service just outside the exclusion zone. They are also organising a surf boat race and various other things, including a Ball in Istanbul on the night of the 26th which sounds fun, so quite happy with it all. We were given the option to cancel with a full refund, but didn't see the need to. Can't remember how much we paid - around $9,000 pp and that was for a suite with balcony so quite reasonable. I think the very expensive ones were from Australia, whereas this is ex Venice or Istanbul.

I'm sure I read somewhere ( possible from DVA ), that all the 'entertainment' stuff will be banned.

IE., no 'surf-boat' races; no rock / pop concerts ( live or on screen ), and nothing else that would be deemed as 'inappropriate' to the occasion.

Not according to the web site? Possibly on the day but this is a few days prior.
The
boatsmapStrip.jpg
Event
The event (adjusted November 2014) will consist of:
  • Day 1 - Morto Bay to the vicinity Fisherman's Hut (approx 1 km north of the North Beach commemoration site) leaving the boats on the beach overnight a distance of 30 km.
  • Day2 Fisherman's Hut to Morto Bay so a total distance rowed of 60km in two days.
  • With your crew swaps this will allow you to have different crews in the boat when rowing close past Anzac Cove in each direction for some photo opportunities.
  • The coastline hear is amazingly rugged with the Sphinx sitting high above your boat as you pass Anzac Coves a great location for our photographer to be positioned out to sea snapping each boat with the landing area as background.
  • Your course runs you right past every major landing point of the 1915 conflict.
  • We start at Morto Bay, a landing spot for the French soldiers.
  • We row closely past V beach where the British first came ashore when they rammed the Steamer the River Clyde up onto the beach disgorging its soldiers directly onto the beach to be met by ferocious resistance from 3 Turkish Machine Guns.
  • Then past Lancashire Landing where again the allied forces were met by heavy resistance.
  • Next is Y beach where more of the allied forces landed including our Anzacs.
  • We move on changing at Fusiliers Bluff and past the highly concentrated landing areas of Anzac Cove, North beach and finally the vicinity of Fisherman's Hut where most of our men never made it past the beach on that first day.
  • This is all reversed on Day 2 so crews will have the opportunity in swapping the crew changeovers to see the different legs on the return trip.
The actual course with leg distances and approximate rowing times can be found below.

Pretty interested in the requirements here. all Land travel? I'll have confirmed bookings into Europe, from Brussels to IST, a tour and confirmed departure. But can't book my connecting land travel between arrival airport and belgium/brussels. The trains are only bookable 3 months in advance.

Anyway, currently reading thxe first couple of volumes of this: https://www.awm.gov.au/histories/first_world_war/

I think they are only interested in exactly how one is getting from Istanbul International, to the Gallipoli site.

Perhaps such info assists with predicting the number of 'tour' bus coaches to arrive ?

That makes sense. Can show how I'm getting there, all good.

In other disturbing news. This will be about my first dawn service since 1990 without a proper gunfire breakfast, given the ban on bundy.

What was the 'qualification' to issue the rum at 04:00 hrs ?

Did you have to have attained a particular rank, or status, such as 'Bossun' ?

( This is a Navy thing, isn't it ? )

Generally, rum is provided post dawn service in your coffee. Had that with the army and attending an RSL following a dawn service the same standard applies.
