KYV was the only real surprise not getting out of Q3 after not leaving enough time for a second run
 
First two sessions OK. Needs a V8 style shootout for Q3
Yes ... that would fix it - today a big rush at the start of Q3 was basically all that rolled into one ...

I think that's similar how it's done for the Indy 500 as well ...
 
I was mowing the lawn and missed quali - after reading some of the comments on the unofficial F1 sites it sounds like I had the better of it in the excitement stakes. Sounds like Q1 was OK but Q3 was a farce with 5 mins of 0 cars on track and a chequered flag falling on an empty track for the first time in F1 history I believe?

Lucky that EPL is still on, otherwise I would be on the phone cancelling Foxtel right now.

As for the podium results - looks like the season is over already to me. They may as well hand out the constructors trophy right now and let HAM and ROS race-off tomorrow for the Drivers Championship - then everyone can go real motor car racing in other categories. Would save a lot of $$.
 
All drivers out of their cars with 4 mins left in Q3.

didn't rush to Fangio to watch it as had a good spot in GP Advantage Bar with screen right in front. Ms KLN Jnr rushed off to Fangio to watch, and I said, sorry but i'm sure the screen was going to be better in the bar. I was right. she came back running at the beginning of Q3 saying the timing was right on the big screens. it was as boring as bat**** anyway. what a waste of effort in changing it. Bernie's got it wrong again. Fangio was half empty, the GP Advantage Bar was completely empty, so I don't know where every one was. will be interesting tomorrow to see how many are there, it certainly doesn't feel like a big crowd at all. there was more people dancing at Rogue Traders (Natalie Bassingthwaite) after Qual than were sitting in Fangio, and half of my friends had deserted Pete's Bar and had come over to that. Strange times. Usually have a couple of OS race lined up by now for the rest of the year, but am glad at this stage that we haven't. glad I only spent the money on Syd-Melb, and Points return than on an OS trip at this stage. maybe that will change, I hope so, this is my no 1 sport
 
A shame I thought it made Q1/2 more interesting. Ferrari would have one-lapped Q3 anyway- decided they couldn't compete..

Only change would have been the back runners might have had a second go
 
Well Qualy might have been a dismal failure but at least the race was a cracker! happy for Nico too win, although would've been happier for Daniel of course. just wish Lewis had stuffed up somewhere again after that dismal start. anyway, a great race!
 
Keep Q1 and Q2 then do a top 10 shootout (single lap each in order 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 based on finishing order of Q2 - yes like what occurs in V8SC at bathurst etc.). Keeps the faster guys going harder in Q2 to get the last slot (more rubber on track etc). Counter is if it rains / rain incoming then 10th may be a better lap slot than 1st but i'm not sure any would be prepared to risk 11th so will still go for it in Q2.


They would also resolve some of their issues with Q3 if the teams were allowed an extra set of tyres that were only allowed to be used for Q3..
 
Thankfully the Ferraris got the jump on the Mercedes at the start of the race otherwise I fear it would have been another runaway win for the Mercs. As it was, Mercedes still finished 1-2.

I used to be a huge F1 fan but this season again is shaping up as a Mercedes procession with possibly Vettel in the Ferrari as a potential spoiler. The rest would seem to be in it to make up the numbers (unfortunately for Dan).

Doesn't make for exciting racing when the race is all but a foregone conclusion.
 
Had a very quick exit from the track
(left Schumacher just after Max's spin) and wandered to the TV near Gate 3.
Race finish - Hotel (BW Atlantis on Spencer) - Qantas lounge with Skybus -- and had a G&T in my hand at 6.58pm.
Unfortunately QF wouldn't move me forward (Red-e upgraded with points) so had plenty of time in the lounge. My flight was full front and back...

As something that might be of more interest to some on this forum.
Did anyone else notice the 'beverage' that was sprayed by the drivers at the finish.

Its no longer GH Mumm...

Understand that another French house has won the contract, but they used a local brand for Melbourne...
(assume similar for the US and South American races)

You'd have to ask the execs at Moet Chandon that.

Given I have never seen Domain Chandon outside Australia (for the Victoria version), US (for the Californian version), (unsure about the Argentinian one) I would expect a reversion to Moet for most of the season (maybe Dom for Monaco?)

I was beginning to think that I was the only one following F1 any more. Interesting to see how the Foxtel/10 split telecasting deal has destroyed the fan base*
