Re: The totally off-topic thread

<snip>Might be a good opportunity to cut the apron strings there (held 'em for over 20 years) as I don't think they'll be doing much divvie-wise in the next few years.

BHP. Bang, out they go at $24.70, best price for ages with a really coughpy outlook. Gotta love funds covering their shorts after a bad bet.

Perhaps Michele Obama will stand one day after learning the lessons sent by the millions of people who did not feel represented. She could restart The Affordable Health care program.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

That Trump won is even more intriguing (alarming for the establishment players and donors).
Much of the Trump vote has been attributed as an anti-Clinton vote. But of course under their system you don't get to vote against anyone, so the downside of voting against Clinton is that you get Trump elected.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

They also felt that compulsory seat belts etc etc was 'undemocratic'.

Both. If you tell an American that we have compulsory voting they can't believe how "un-democratic" that is.

To win any position at any level of government in the US, you only need 25% to 30% of the public to come out and vote for you.

I remember years ago I held shares in a company that went from something like $5 to $10 in a day and I had quite a few. All because traders had to cover their shorts. Was rather nice. I didn't sell at the peak but did sell shortly thereafter. Can't remember the company though. :o

OT but..... Beaconsfield Gold quickly went from low cents to $'s a decade and a half ago

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Now California wants to be a country all by itself.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

That Trump quote above (although funny) is fake apparently.

Looking at the pathetic turnout of voters (just over 50%) makes me wonder what our turnout would be if we had non-compulsory voting. I know that living in a safe seat makes me feel like it's a waste of time but I do like to have my say in the upper houses at least. The turn-out could be well below that in the US without compulsory voting perhaps.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Seems to be fake
Despite People's comprehensive online content archive, we found no interview or profile on Donald Trump in 1998 (or any other time) that quoted his saying anything that even vaguely resembled the words in this meme. Trump appeared somewhat regularly in the magazine's pages before he came to star on The Apprentice, but the bulk of the magazine's celebrity-driven coverage of him back then centered on his marriages to, and divorces from, Ivana Trump and Marla Maples.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Our shares are in an SMSF and so require an investment strategy to ensure long term growth. Day trading is seen as 'running a business' and which is prohibited.
don't think this is true. I certainly day trade. You just have to have a strategy that allows a small amount of day trading. The main criterion is that the purpose of your super fund is to provide a retirement income, there is nothing that says a small amount of day trading is at odds with that purpose.

Day traders if they do enough, can argue that it is a business and thus tax treatment is different to someone just investing, but
that doesn't mean that a bit of day trading automatically turns into a business. That's my understanding anyway and my very conservative accountant has never had a problem with it.

At the moment I am fully invested in long term stocks, so can sit on the sideline and enjoy the gyrations, but would love to have had some spare money yesterday - was a bit like being a kid in a lolly shop :)

Was higher than election turnout (49%) when Bill won second term. The % this time around was not unusual.
Have your say but the freedom to vote or not is important too.
