2016 US Presidential Election and Fallout

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

They did with Brexit, did with Trump and will do it with whoever leads the breakaway Australian Conservative Party at the next election.

Whilst the political correctness bit is one element, I suspect it had more to do with the uneven distribution of the benefits of "globalisation". Brexit particularly and to a lesser extent Trump were more about disenfranchisement from the economic system and increasing disparity between the rich and the working poor. Will be interesting to see where it ends, in Australia income and wealth inequality is getting worse but not as bad as in either UK or US (I think in US the 20% wealthiest people own 80% of all wealth, whilst in AU it's only about 60%).

In Australia, those with political correctness disease, should drop their pretensions, and just say it's about giving people a "fair go". Who can argue with that? :D

Remind me which one counts again?

One counts for the practical outcome.
The other counts for the significance some are attempting to ascribe to it.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Michael Moore predicted a trump win about 6 months ago. Basically he said Mitt Romney lost by 64 electoral votes and all Trump need was four of the blue rust belt states and not have to worry about Florida or Colorado. Trumps message resonated despite using undocumented workers, making his products in China etc (The list is long).

Adam Scott the creator of Dillbert, also said about six months plus ago, that Trump would win. His reasoning is he used a type of hypnotism and power of suggestion.

In the USA a lot of gerrymander that takes place favours the Republicans.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

So Trump lost the popular vote by a little less than 200,000 votes in a total of 119 million votes.
He won 30 states,Clinton 20.
He won 10 states by 60%+,Clinton won 5 by that margin.
He got a higher percentage of black, hispanic, under 30 and poor voters than Mitt Romney giving a lie to the statement that the USA is more divided.
Clinton got less black, hispanic, under 30,poor and women voters than Barack Obama hence why she lost.
A lower percentage of women voters this time compared to 2008 and 2012.

The suggestion that there is a Republican gerrymander is laughable-Trump won states the Republicans hadn't won in a Presidential election for 30 years. All the pundits agree that with the Demographic changes in the USA it is much easier for the Democrats to win.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

She won 50 plus of the population.

She lost lost because of educated white men (and women) that believe in conspiracy theories yet who voted for the one with boldest conspiracy theories.

No she lost because she couldn't retain the voters that Obama had.
As I said Trump won more black and Hispanic voters than Mitt Romney and John McCain. And they are not counted as white voters.
So can you just accept the result of the Election.
Your side lost even with all the media on side and a huge advantage in political donations.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

She won 50 plus of the population.

She did not come close to that.

In any case, the focus on the popular vote is like saying Australia should have won the 2015 Ashes because they scored more runs.

All these attempts to impose some sort of narrative on the vote are hopelessly flawed when a tad over 100,000 votes in the opposite direction would have changed the outcome.

She won 50 plus of the population.<snip>.

No, she won about 26% of the population (of voting age), about the same as Trump.

She lost lost because of educated white men (and women) that believe in conspiracy theories yet who voted for the one with boldest conspiracy theories.

Ah. You are referring to the media there, right? Believing the conspiracy of polls that got it so wrong and promoting the conspiracy that Clinton was a sure fire thing.

I see the whiney young (Edit: and one of the Scots newspapers - see comment above  ) are out in force again, just like after Brexit vote.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Just like the post Brexit media reaction, especially in Scotland, that newspaper and its contemptuous dismissal of those who voted for Trump shows exactly why Trump won. The good news is that this mob will never admit their mistakes, nor change their disparaging of the ordinary person, and the Brexit/Trump movement will continue to rise :) .

May the Daily Record, and its ilk, continue to thrive.

Last time I checked Brexit was on hold.

Plenty of filibusters to come.

Trump/Republicans/Tories care about the common man...

Well that third statement is true-that's why they won Brexit/Presidency.
The other 2 statements suggest that Labour/Democrats don't accept the decision of voters.Remember the howls of indignation when Trump suggested he might not accept the result.

Check again ... Brexit is going ahead, one way ... or another.

Yes, conservatives do care about the common man (and women!) - who were Trump's base supporters again? Yes, those who the Clinton mob sneered at as 'rednecks'. Now, how about Clintons? Its the elitist types like urban Greens who cheer when working men and women are thrown out of work in rural areas in the forestry, mining, salmon farming etc industries.

This is all fine ... we are having a nice to-and-fro ... but the sneering, name calling and foot stamping its getting a bit predictable and boring.

A bunch of people should have a bit of a cry, then stick their thumbs in their mouths and sulk in silence if they can't contribute positively.

They should have just said "PAGES 2-15".

Having grown up there I can assure you that newspaper has never been known for quality unbiased journalism whether it be football, politics or religion.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Maybe the media has exaggerated the protests against Trump's Presidency. "Several thousand" demonstrators split between California, NY & Washington etc. (most of whom looked like student rent-a-crowd types) doesn't say much in a country of a few hundred million.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

My friend told me last night that her husband was asked, "Got your bags back to go back to Mexico yet?"

He was born in the US, and this was a customer that he has worked with for 5 years.

This isnt a one off incident, its happening to others.
