2021 Travel Plans

Given MrsK and I are only a few years from full retirement, our plans were to travel domestically for the next few years and then do a 'big' trip for 3-4 months somewhere internationally. I lived and worked in many places across Australia over my life, and it's been fun going back with MrsK and show her the sights.

For 2021 we have two big trips planned, and one potential from Canberra
- March, family wedding in Melbourne and then onto Tassie for a week in a campervan, including lunch at Fat Pig Farm
- June, Port Douglas at the Reef House (LE Package), and back to Brisbane for a couple of nights at the Stamford Plaza
- Oct (potential) Busselton WA using the new Jetstar flight from Melbourne
Tallying up our flying so far for 2021, it was a tick for the first two items on our list but no to Busselton. However, we have planned and booked:
- August, Canberra to Noosa for a break
- Oct, Newcastle for the AFF Get Together (although by car)
- Dec, Christmas in Hervey Bay and then onto Cairns for our wedding anniversary at The Reef House

2022 - planning our Winter getaway from Canberra - anywhere warm will do

Well it looks very like mrsdrron won't be coming south next week with 2 close contacts from the Portugese restaurant in Brisbane deciding to have a holiday in Noosa rather than stay isolated.Went to the Eumundi markets on Saturday. What could go wrong.

So we are doing another QLD road trip heading north. Two nights at the IC Hayman Island on points purchased with 100% bonus.
Then 4 nights in Townsville before returning home the long way via Emerald and Roma.

We did Beechworth in January and I did a night in adl in May, but that's it so far.
June gold coast got canned as did July NZ trip. Trying again for NZ next month along with FNQ, rescheduled GC for November.🤞

We booked a stay in MEL for early June, but had to cancel because of the lockdown.

We have now booked a stay in BNE for early December, but not really confident this will happen.

I was supposed to fly to Canberra tomorrow and have a week in rural NSW. I cancelled my flight yesterday and got my travel credit.

Today I got a ping from Qantas app to say my flight check in is open 😭

What a sad thread this is turning into - after dodging a few border closures and getting away several times over teh past 12 months - now had to cancel:
  • Queensland this week
  • Coffs Harbour in 2 weeks
Worried about:
  • Lizard Island in early Sept
  • Tassie in late Oct
  • NZ in late Nov
Right now even a trip to the pub would be welcome.

Well if and when you are allowed out, and you re-book your Coffs Harbour trip, perhaps we can catch up at a local pub.

We cancelled our July 24 Intrepid Broome-Darwin overland on final payment day. Kept small deposit as credit.

Decided to waitlist with another company in August, booked some refundable accommodation and flights and it was looking borderline until today. Zero chance WA will open the border to QLD but we’ll wait until last minute to cancel. The company we’ve waitlisted with have eight Qlders on the trip and a couple from Vic. We’d even booked with the star man :(

Yesterday both flights to Cairns for our NY break at PD and PC changed. Flight up changed from midday to 6am and our evening flight back to BNE cancelled. All sorted out with a call to premium line with very short wait.

I feel so sorry for every person employed in travel and hospitality.

Well that's the NZ trip cancelled as of last night :(
Two weeks out and there is no way things will be opening up in time.

Oh well, I guess I got to enjoy seeing an international trip, with a comment about relaxing at the SYD FLounge in my QF app for the last couple of months.

Marlborough and West Coast of the South Island in 7 weeks. Currently connecting flight in & out of Sydney to Christchurch (which of course does not work), but flexible, can re-direct via Brisbane or Adelaide if needed. I'll be going absolutely.

I just cancelled Darwin and a Kakadu / Arnhem Land side trip for early August. Not booking anything now until we know when we are out of lockdown in Sydney and other states / territories let us in....by Xmas would be nice! So frustrating that both of us are fully vaccinated as well....

We were going to drive down to Sydney in early August with a probable stop off in Port Stephens to see our neighbour from maitland days who has been moved to a nursing home. Now unlikely to ever see her again.
So doing a QLD road trip again.
But one more trip booked for Christmas. The Indian Pacific from Sydney to Perth with our family.Even if things appear well under control I fear the WA Premier will still be blocking travel from Sydney.

I'm booked on the Indian Pacific SYD-PER on 1 December (and QF PER-SYD on 30 Nov).

Even if the border opens, I suspect the IP will have quite a lag before getting operational again.

Hmmmmm....

Assuming the current lockdowns will end by August and that the NZ bubble will be open ..... so from Sydney I am think of a trip to Christchurch/Queenstown or Tassie in early Oct this year, fully vaccinated. BUT, which would be a safer place to go in terms of not being forced to go in HQ when coming back.
Very much of a crystal ball answer but AFFers' experience and knowledge should come up with some risk analysed answers! :)
