2024 Paris Olympics

Having volunteered for Sydney 2000 and Melbourne Comm Games 2006 (where I was also in the Closing Ceremony) will certainly watch Opening and Closing ceremonies......but not live at 2.30am tomorrow šŸ˜“
Also a local girl is in the boxing, so will watch that.
I see Celine Dion is preparing a duet with Lady Gaga. Celine hasn't performed since 2019. I'd love to see it live but likely the replay will somehow butcher it.

Maybe

Depends on the ā€œOlympic Effectā€

Will people In Europe keep flying or will there be a stay home effect meaning planes and vacant hotel rooms are hard to fill ?

When I last looked airfares in the second week were fair and hotel pricing had come down from their ridiculous highs it was still Around double normal times instead of the quadruple / tenfold

Once the swimming and athletics programs are over, people leave town
Isnā€™t swimming at the start, and athletics at the end?

Hereā€™s the calendar

So yes
More a follow on

However, the team based sports also reach end of rounds, QFs, then Semi-finalsšŸ‰ so as teams drop out they are finished in the competitions

Looking forward to the duet, I will admit to "concert envy" when @Drakecula saw Lady Gaga in Vegas.
I did see Celine at Crown Palladium Melbourne in 1998, pretty impressive back then.

Track cycling, even those strange points races where it's impossible to know what's going on.

Womens 1500m getting buzz as the match up of the track meet. And the Titmus/Ledecky/(young Canadian?) in the 400m free will be epic.

Paris is such a beautiful city in its own right and i found the parts i watched - later in the event, to be spectacular. It was certainly a little different though. Almost chaotic in fact.

The athletes looked sodden. Hope those that are competing the next day don't suffer consequences.

While it's a highlight for the athletes they must reduce the length of that 'parade'.......we didn't watch it but listened on the radio until the action started.

Not sure about the cauldron.

Despite the unrelenting rain, the opening ceremony was spectacular and classy. I didnā€™t think anyone could outdo the Queen jumping out of a plane with 007, but the French did. I wonā€™t put in too many spoilers for those who will watch it later, but the Minions were one of many highlights.

Well, having watched it now I think a lot of it was kind of weird. That said, I think foreigners who watched the Sydney Olympic games opening ceremony might have thought the same. But being a made for TV event rather than being in a stadium, I think definitely detracted from it.

Iā€™ll laughed out loud when ABC broadcasters described the thing carrying the Olympic cauldron a ā€œballoon like structureā€. Never heard of the Montgolfier brothers, obviously.

And some buffoon on channel 9 talking over the top of the French National anthem šŸ˜Ÿ

Can anyone tell me why retired Canadian singer CĆ©line Dion had such a prominent part in the ceremony?

Interesting that Australia only had about 80 of some 430 athletes on the boat.. whereas the US looked to have a lot more (team of 600).

Watched the highlights package on 9Now.

Celine is French Canadian and her first language is French. Her name? CĆ©line Marie Claudette Dion. Tres Francaise.

She has not performed since 2019 because of her health issues. This was her first appearance in years as her voice started to return.

She wrote her first music and performed only in French until she broke into the US market in the 1990's. We went to her Melbourne concert maybe in 2018-2019. We flew to Melbourne just to see her. She performed some of her songs in French even then. She often sang in French in duets with Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli and the like.

What made me šŸ¤¢ was the stupid 9 person say how well she sang in French. Do your research hey before talking on TV.

Sure, and I know how accomplished and well-known she is but she still Canadian. You would think the French would want all the headline acts to be French, not French-Canadian. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Bring back Edith Piaf! ( Well, they managed Marie Antoinette!)

But then they also had American and Spanish athletes in prominent positions in the torch relay so I guess the French were just trying to be less typically French šŸ˜Š.

I wouldā€™ve loved to have seen Kathy Freeman hand over the torch to Marie Jose Perec šŸ˜Ž

Well I reckon the French knew what they were doing when selecting her. People have criticised the Ceremony but have not heard one criticism of her.

The Barcelona Olympics used Sarah Brightman and that was spectacular.

Watching the opening ceremony I did have a feeling it would be cool to be involved in some way in an Olympics one time.

Who were the Channel 9 commentators? I recognised Todd Woodbridge, was one of the others Karl Stefanovic?

Yes. And Sarah Abo. I read even Scott Cam and maybe even Sophie Monk. . I don't follow channel 9 at all but no choice. Might flick to Stan.

It certainly is.

I figured its because shes French canadian but for Lady Gaga and Snoop Dog carrying the flame.... no idea.

I think the opening is like my terminal transfers at CDG airport many years ago, it could be done so much better but if something can be made painful or long, the French will figure out how to do it for funsies
