2024 Paris Olympics

I was watching the swimming heats earlier on Ch9 and thought the picture quality was very poor. It also lagged a bit behind the sound, which made the starts and finishes annoying to watch.
I have just switched to Stan and the audio visual is perfect.

I wonder if that’s deliberate ?

I think Ch9 has fixed the audio visual disconnect. Quality is definitely poor on laptop.

We might have to instigate a spoiler alert on this thread. You cannot watch everything live.
Unless it’s a seriously big event you might record to watch later then really we are just posting what’s happened on free to air.

No. I was just having a bit of fun above, but I do speak French , and can belt out the French natural anthum😊.

My point was that I was surprised that the French gave a leading role to someone who is not from France no matter how talented. I mean are they so so lacking in native talent that they need to import artists? Think of Sydney 2000 - Tina Arena was not an internationally well known artist, but she was spectacular in the opening ceremony.
Who is a famous French singer?

I think maybe they meant - alive! Celine Dions song was originally performed by Edith Piaf.
I think Celine was a great choice for the ceremony.
I’m not personally a fan of of her music but given her background and previous Olympic appearance I think it was a good choice.

Taped the Opening and just finished watching it in fast forward...
Not sure if I was watching Mardi Gras or Eurovision...
Thank God for the Minions.

And they could have used a few more lasers...

Who is a famous French singer?
Tina Arena of all people. The French have embraced her as one of their own. Would do something more contemporary than Celine. More French than Celine...Canada will never be France and the language is considered bogan French.

Oh, I thought they were asking for famous French singers.

Hang on - they were.

But if the Olympic mob can get Marie Antoinette up and performing in the ceremony, surely Edith and/or Chukkie would be no problem?

Having lived in Quebec, I was going to be too polite to actually mention Québecois (AKA 'French Canadian') compared to the French language; I mean - tabernac ...câlice ! ... but I think she scrubbed up very well on the night and really belt that song out as good as anyone.

Sort of the way a Kiwi could sing Waltzing Matilda bloody well if they got the accent right.

I was there when Cadel Evans won the TdeF and Tina belted it out on the Champs Elysee — brilliant night

And Edith Piaf and Charles Aznivour are available for the Opening Ceremony?
The fact that you couldn’t name any alive French singers if maybe why they went for Celine Dion who is French Canadian
Oh, please read your own posts. You asked me to name a famous French singer. I named a couple.

I also pointed out that the opening ceremony managed to bring 'alive' someone who was deceased. So deceased French singers were not entirely out of the question.

And please, while you’re at it, have a read of my posts and what I said about Céline Dion‘s performance.

I think that’s done this sub topic.

Spoke to my sister in Paris last night. She offered a few interesting tidbits...

  • The centre of Paris has been closed for months, so there's a lot of relief that the Opening Ceremony is finally over so that people can travel more easily.
  • The weather is dreary now but they're forecasting 35 decrees C in a couple of days.
  • Her family is heading off to the table tennis tonight. Tickets for the mixed doubles round of 16 session cost EUR 100 each!!! (She thinks that "last-minute" tickets might be cheaper now and regrets buying them in advance at full cost).
