2024 Paris Olympics

hey really raise the Olympic flag upside down?
Why not?. I heard the opening ceremony was a bit of risqué, so why not be a bit anti-establishment.

France (or is it Paris?) for me is where the circus became an art - infused with counter culture, politically radical elements and a healthy dose of mockery.

I'm shocked at how many tickets are still available
It is quite normal - except for opening and closing ceremony and some gold medal prime events.

Soccer is not a prime Olympic event, nor should it be.
Go to the soccer World Cup for that.

Well I haven't watched a thing and won't
Me neither.

Canada will never be France and the language is considered bogan French.
Correct. The Treaty of Paris said as much. But the Quebecois in Canadia will forever hold onto that imagining.

.....

Cèline?. Nah she is not French.
Should not have been there. Put in her place any of France's French-Afro singers. But who am I to say.

Oh, please read your own posts. You asked me to name a famous French singer. I named a couple.

I also pointed out that the opening ceremony managed to bring 'alive' someone who was deceased. So deceased French singers were not entirely out of the question.

And please, while you’re at it, have a read of my posts and what I said about Céline Dion‘s performance.

I think that’s done this sub topic.
What was the context of asking for a French singer?

All I know is Japan one it's first gold medal and it's 500th in all Olympics. Women's judo was the event.

I also can sing La Marseillaise.

Almost as good as Julie Antony!
How did you stack up?

film starring Ernest Borgnine and a number of other foreign actors
I guess you have not heard of Myléne Farmer....and others..
Aya Nakamura was also featured - who is actually French, Im told by Mrs QS who speaks French (but mrs QS is not French)

Putting Céline (who is not French) in there suggests that that are no French singers of note - which would actually be quite a slap in the face IMO.
I would dispute that she is "French-Canadian". A quick perusal of her history suggests her ancestors came from France to Canada in the 1600s

Never prepurchase olympic tickets unless it is a must go to event

Strewth - for Sydney I bought about 12 event tickets - but they did include three nights of Thorpie and Freeman's 400m. I did get the Opening & Closing courtesy of work :) .

Which reminds me. I just saw the very opening of the Opening Ceremony broadcast - where the guy enters the Stade de France with the torch ... by mistake. Reminded me of the Sydney pre-ceremony routine, when the grass-cutter bumbled onto the field and had to be moved on. In fact the entire opening sequence with Zinedine Zidane was very well done.

Which led me to look for who France's most-watched in Paris might be. Quite a different profile of sports from us

Only 1 swimmer amongst the 15 athletes named (no track and field). Lot of team sports.

At least in London, IMO, the most memorable was not the singers but Mr Bean

The Queen!!

I too was surprised (mystified in relation to the Minions (seriously, why??)) by the use of the many non-French at prominent moments of the opening ceremony. It's such a departure from tradition, but clearly that was a key objective. Most of the news highlights focus on Lady Gaga, Celine Dion and Raphael Nadal, which is hardly a celebration or showcase of French achievement. Critiques comparing it to Mardi Gras or Eurovision are valid IMO, and shows they missed the mark or the mark was in the wrong place.

Whilst it was spectacular - the location guaranteed that was always going to be the case - it was rather disjointed (the 9 commentary didn't help much there) and IMO purposefully and unnecessarily provocative on occasion. The Last Supper parody (or whatever it was meant to be) was deliberate blasphemy and disrespectful. Surely the first KPI when they start to plan these things is upholding the Olympic values?

Grump grump….swimming on the tv with the sound off, equestrian cross country on the ipad turned up loud… a bit of peace and quiet would be nice...

I wonder what the most memorable event at the opening ceremony was, given that shows were spread out all over Paris
At least in London 2012, IMO, the most memorable was not the singers but Mr Bean

Not Bond and the Queen?

Being a grumpy old person here but this skateboarding carnage is crazy. Competitors are way too young. Everyone is crashing. Stupid. And then there's the commentators talking their carp talk. Worse than surfer commentators. Gnarly dude!

I have to agree. For the best skaters in the world, the crashes are just too prevalent.

And the teenage commentators! Pathetic

Why can't Ch9 publish the sport timetable so you can just tune in when your sport is on.

Best thing is to check into the Ch9 app as all the events are shown there.

Yes the skateboarding reminds me of when my son was into skateboarding. We insisted on him wearing not only a helmet, but also wrist and knee guards. Fortunately he soon grew out of that phase 😊

But I agree they are just kids competing, should be at a junior Olympics. Kind of takes away from the athletes that have been training for many many years to be selected for the Olympics

Now watching the amazing Simone Biles, she is incredible
