I didn't realise how big the fallout was over the Canada womens soccer 'drone scandal' was where they spied on the Kiwi closed training session.

Two assistant coaches originally sent home, but then the head coach sent packing and a FIFA ban on her for anything soccer related for 12-months, $345k fine, Canada deducted 6 points (and currently down 1-0 to France at half time, so likely about to be knocked out of the tournament).

Canada footballl association has found evidence that this has been going on for awhile. They may yet be stripped of the Tokyo olympic gold which will elevate the Matildas to bronze medalists.

Wow.

I have no idea how a body can do that!
Generally they are VERY petite
Simone is under 150cm IIRC but super strong in her frame
The great Olga Korbut was even under 40kg.

Just wait till the rhythmic gymnastics- I don't know how they bend their spines the other way and touch their heels. Some of us can't touch our toes bending the normal way.

Canada score in the 12th minute of stoppage time to beat France 2-1 and stay in the comp. And unless Australia can at least draw with the USA (who seem to be in devastating form at the moment), then the Matildas may be the one to miss out on the quarter finals (probably need Columbia to at least draw with Canada as the other potential way out).

Yes, very petite and usually very young. Nadia Comaneci comes to mind. In the past. In a healthy sign their stature and age seems to have changed and they are still capable of wonderful feats.

What is this thing called toes that you are talking about. ;)

There still is immense pressure these days. Weight and looks still are a major requirement in gymnastics - hence the word "Artistic"

Gymnasts also get deducted for attire violations and are awarded points for "Artistic presentation".

Judged sports at the Olympics have always been in my eyes a bit suss despite the incredible feats that the athletes display.

The casual spectator will have no understanding of how some sports are judged and thats fine on one level and a problem on another.
The problem is that often the opinion of the spectator and and judges differ let alone the opinion of the seasoned informed spectator vs the judges. This creates suspicion and a feeling of unfairness.

Here is the FIG womens gymnastics scoring for 2024. The rules get reviewed after the Olympics. I always suggest people who are interested in the outcomes of judged sports to read the scoring rules for that sport. Of course, if the spectator is interested in the spectacle, then it is not necessary.

IMO:
The best athletes tends to score slightly higher than someone at the average level. First and last athletes to perform don't get the most accurate judging.

Trivia:
In rhythmic gymnastics the ribbon routine at the highest levels requires the airconditoning to be turned off. It can get hot depending on the climate at the time.

Yes. Well aware of that. Was brought up in a Gymnastics and Ballet environment until I was 18 and am watching family members in the current day. Everything in the performing Arts is based on the judgements of the examiners.

Japan media today reporting that they topping the gold medal tally. Same number of gold as Australia but one medal overall than Australia.

"Japan media" is correct. And Australian media is reporting the same thing.

By the measure of the most gold medals won, Japan is topping the tally with 4 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze. Australia is second with 4 gold and 2 silver.

By the measure of the most medals won, USA is topping the tally with 12 medals (3G, 6S and 3B).

"Meanwhile, the food options available — widely reported to be dominated by a vegan diet — are so bad that even the British team has brought its own chef."

btw: Quite surprised at all the whinging about the opening ceremony. Seems some can't accept French view of cultural activities. I thought it was very good, despite the rain.
