I'm not a unionist in the slightest... But how are the unions pricing Australia out of the market. The cost of living here is what it is. Do you suggest people who have worked for a highly specialized qualification just bend over and get paid below what it costs to live in Australia?

There are plenty of skilled workers at Qantas (pilots in particular) who are paid less than an employee of Aldi or woolworths.
The unions have been demanding unsustainable "entitlements" in the face of fierce international competition. There is no way I would pay Thousands of dollars more to fly on Qantas than say, Fiji Airways to LAX etc, they have outpriced themselves, as they keep bowing to union pressures. That is why Jetstar will continue to grow, they have a much lower sustainable cost base. Qantas in its current form is a loss making beast, and the Unions need to accept they they are partially responsible. Aussie car makers are the same, ridiculous wage bills for assembly line workers etc.
In other countries, where unions don't hold companies to ransom, the cost base is lower, as is inflation and the cost of living accordingly.

Salary paid is only one component. Inefficient work practices are far more damaging to a companies bottom line.

And perhaps even more damaging are highly paid executives who seem to make one terrible decision after another and a board who seem to be totally bewildered.

Do you mean "employee" of Aldi or Woolworths to be like the deputy CEO or Vice President, etc lol ?
I'm pretty sure QF A380 Captains get close to $half a mil, which is close to double of what their SQ counterparts earn. And no SIN is not a cheap place to live.

I'm no unionist... I'd gladly lower my hourly rate if my government lowered taxes and did something about the cost of living here in Australia. Simple fact is that yes wages are too high... but so is our cost of living...

Major shareholders normally take action in regards to poor performing Board/CEO/MD. Maybe the top 3 owners that own 60+% of the company are contented to see things run the course..

Lets face it - Clifford/Joyce were given an agenda and we're getting close to the climax!

Yep, as I said, unions a PARTIALLY to blame, the country is F&^%ed, lets all move to Iraq

Comparisons between countries are futile. Someone earning $400k AUD in Australia would take home the same amount of pay as someone earning the equivalent of $275k AUD in Singapore. And Singapore can be a cheap place to live, depending on a multitude of factors, but for example locals who started their careers on fairly low pays could enjoy lower housing costs than Australians. As I said comparisons between countries are futile.

Like a new Porsche Carrera convertible I saw in a shopping centre display in Miami, here about $235K there USD$118K. Waitresses there get about $5hour + tips, add penalty rates + here the sky is the limit what $30 + tips?,, so yes need to compare apples with apples pilots included.

IIRC part of the pilot salary issue was to do with the aussie dollar.... when the dollar was down around 70-80c the pilot wages were more in line with international counterparts. When the aussie is riding high it can make our pilots look expensive.

Perhaps the comparison should be with VA 777 captains. Anyone know what they can earn?

breaking news on channel 7 saying Qantas will cut up to 5000 jobs and sell the airport lease in Melbourne. Interesting times ahead.

News Corp Australia reporting 5,000 jobs to go. It said 1500 of those jobs could come from the executive and support divisions of the Qantas group, and a large number of jobs would be abolished by the end of March.
