27th February Big Qantas announcement

Management also has a big part in productivity, for instance ground handling used to be a Qantas forte at Australian airports, contract after contract has been lost in the past five years, in some cases because QF did not bid.

Apart from the pilots how are they extremely skilled people?

skilled enough to tolerate the ignorance of you and others out there... you wouldn't get through the first days training of the 'real role' of F/As ...and it doesn't involve 'licking your a**e'..it involves 'saving your a**e'...no point in going into detail with you...enough said

I wouldn't mind 'watching' the actual announcement if that is at all possible.

I'll be in POM on Thursday so I can kiss goodbye any main stream coverage other than the glossing over it will get on Nine's Today show on Friday through Imparja.

Does any body know if there is a live web stream of the half year results? Following from that, if there is one I would appreciate the link details if anybody has them.
I have managed to stumbled across a spot where I can actually get very good high speed internet in POM at last.

I know other than any big hits the real devil for frequent travellers may well buried in the detail, but I would like to see and hear the actual announcement as it is delivered. Much appreciated if anyone can assist.

Re the note on the Santiago service in post 559 ...... I flew QF28 a few weeks back and the load was LOW ...... I'd be interested to know anyone knows what the average loads SYD - SCL -SYD are .... does it stack up? is there a hidden freight value etc.

Agreed that volume can help with productivity and covering fixed costs,
but if your variable costs are substantially different from competitors it may not make a difference

My reference in 559 was just a joke, highlighting the trumpeting of the SAA codeshare in last years annual report as part of their strategy only to be dumped recently.

Qantas's costs were lower in most cases, as the staff are there, and on a shift thats fixed. One of the down sides in cutting flights is a loss of productivity in this area unless your staff are on casual employment like most of the LCCs. Menzies and Dnata were nowhere near their size in Australia ten years ago.

Noted QPProletarian ...... But I was just asking on SCL - SYD viability just based on my own experienced... the load on my flight was very low hence I'm just interested on the 'averages' to see if the route normally has enough punters to stack. Thanks very much the Sky News info for a feed, Cheers.

They should be gone. If Joyce sacks 3000 or more, he should be the first to go. The workers who will be cut don't make the decisions. The CEO, board and the other management are the ones who have made the calls (a lot of them have been ordinary) so they should go. They are the first to take credit when something is a success but never put thier hand up and say that they made a mistake.

Stupid decisions including wasting money in Asia for no return, Jetstar and all its subsidaries (particularly HKG which won't get off the ground), the 65% market share strategy.........do I need to go on?

Joyce and the board should all go straight away - which won't happen. Some of the other managers need to go too - Hickey should go because this great golden egg called Emirates was meant to fix so many problems and yet it clearly hasn't. The only one I would keep is Strambi - he actually knows his stuff

They should have Kept Borghetti how could they just let him go like that.

Just a thought but maybe the board don't think that things can be saved, so they have said to AJ, stay around, take the flak for this, we will pay for $xx_x to stay until the changes are made then you can go on your merry way.
If the board sack AJ and get someone else in and things continue to go belly up then the board have no-where to go.

I doubt SCL would be axed before the World Cup.

I dont think it will be cut at all, traffic has grown 10% year on year comparison and in November, it had the highest seat occupancy of all services.

Along with the tag flights to GIG for the world cup, QF announce a number of supplementary services to SCL earlier this year (Latest Qantas News).

I think the 27/28 must be doing okay based on that. It's also more or less a monopoly route and they get good feed from LA with the codeshare agreement.

Depends on what they intend to do with the 747 fleet I guess. There are rumours that retirements are going to be accelerated even more so than the current plan. Keep in mind that the ERs are just over 12 years old and still should have a bit of life in them yet!

+1 and Aerolineas argentinia has/is also quitting the South America market so more for QF to have :)

Strategy? You call this a strategy? For something to warrant that title, it has to be able to survive for more than a couple of months.

Was the codeshare dumped willingly, or as a precursor to a foreshadowed negative ACCC outcome opposing the codeshare? Playing politics with the route, more perhaps even out maneuvered by VA? Whatever the case, the environment changes and so must the strategy.
