27th February Big Qantas announcement

Just like the QF figure has shifted backwards and forwards over recent months? At one stage one analyst was predicting a $600m loss to be announced at the HY results.

I wouldn't take what either have provided as "guidance" to be absolutely gospel.

Its not like QF at all, as VA until a few weeks ago had not provided any guidance that could shift. Given how recent that guidance is, its unlikely to see much variance before formal announcement of actuals.

QF is going to the coffers :( Wonder what will remain next week and in the coming months besides QFd & the Orange Cancer....

If QF did become purely a Full service Domestic carrier, and a Low Cost International carrier, it may not necessarily be a bad thing to ensure the survival of QF (and no doubt make shareholders happy). Perhaps they're going to sell their International operations to EK ?

Though QF was profitable more recently than VA though only just-

Australian flag carrier Qantas is slowly beginning to turnaround financially as the air carrier logged $6 million full-year net profits, its first after it suffered from its first loss since the company was privatised.
The profit was made possible by reducing debt and costs, selling non-core asset and flagging a cut in capital spending. With the improvement in Qantas's finances, shares in the air carrier went up 14 per cent after the firm's underlying pre-tax profit doubled to $192 million.

Coalition to axe Qantas foreign ownership laws: Truss

The federal government will move swiftly to amend the Qantas Sale Act in order to lift the foreign ownership restrictions on the airline and abolish requirements that it keeps the majority of its maintenance and other facilities in Australia.

With the airline to announce on Thursday a large six-month loss, plans to shed thousands of jobs and a restructure the airline’s operations, all; to save $2 billion over three years, Transport Minister Warren Truss said it was time the airline competed on a level playing field.

I'm a bit bored with all the talk of a financial bail-out. i don't even know why the politicians are entertaining it.

i guess i can see things from their point of view... they have fantastic lounges and I imagine their experience of flying QF would be nothing short of spectacular each and every time. what they see is an outstanding airline, with outstanding service, doing it's best, but still failing. they probably think it's worth putting some money into it.

but that's not really what we experience is it? some examples:

- checkin staff telling you to collect bags in sydney even on a same ticket
- running out of food and beverages
- cafe breakfasts
- glacial service times for international meals
- aging aircraft
- outdated product
- an expensive frequent flyer scheme that potentially gives you a '50% off' rather than being free
- inconsistent crews that can make flying qantas a less than pleasurable experience
- call centers that refuse to waive fees and charges for transactions that can't be competed on line
- bookings that can't be made for certain overseas origins (china, Thailand etc)
- a customer charter that leaves passengers worse off than flying their competitors
- call centre staff indicating they know better than we do, even when they're wrong

the positives? ummm... free wine on domestic flights?

Problem is they dont have the power to do so, they need the support of Labor who have said no.

not yet but possibly will have from 1 July depending on the outcome of the WA Senate re-run. Does the Act prevent them from establishing QFi as a separate subsidiary company now?

QF would probably prefer a Gov guarantee in the short/medium term. QF have played the Gov support game perfectly.

It's a pity the game has come at the cost of the travelling public and staff..

Jobs come and go. The people that get shafted this week, next month or later in the year are going to have go and find another job - no biggie. Happens all the time....

Sounds like the same thing a certain PM said recently

Depends if QF Loyalty gets sold to WOW.

I recently did a survery where they were asking all sorts of things about Everyday Rewards, including potential rebrands and new logos and offers, and basically no questions about the QFF points, so Woolworths may not be interested?

Industries change and so does employment security....It's better to focus on the 30 odd thousand that will still have a job.
And who's to say most of those "5000" won't have an opportunity to be re-employed to perform a similar role by another company - but almost certainly under different working conditions.
