28° Mastercard Cash Advances while overseas [No more free cash advances from 1/1/14]

I disagree with your assumption.

Earlier this month, myself and three of my travelling companions ALL withdrew yen at the Citibank ATM at Narita (Terminal 2 arrivals) and we were all successful (with no additional fee). I have used Citibank on a number of occasions but most often use Post Bank ATMs as they are more conveniently located around Japan.

Interesting!
It was the Citibank Terminal at Terminal 2 and it wouldn't work for me.
I subsequently used it to pay for train passes .
I wonder if this acted as some form of activation?
I previously had a wizard card that had been used overseas.
I seem to remember posts from the early days of this card with initial use problems

I was doing some trial runs to smooth my wifes use in the UK later this month.
As I said in a previous post I didn't try at any other ATMs (apart from Post Bank)

It's an exaggeration to say pretty much only post offices will give you yen.

The citibank ATM at the airport has always worked for me, as have all other Citi atms in Japan. Practically every 7-11 has an ATM that will work too. Lastly, random other atms will work if you are desperate; in a shopping centre in Odaiba I tried an atm for fun and it worked without a hitch. Not even an ATM owner charge.

Recent Experiences in Japan!
Arrived at Narita airport and tried withdrawing from the Citibank and I think a HSBC ATM in the arrival concourse and despite trying all the options I could think of(cash advance, withdrawal from credit card) it was no go.

I was able to get cash out with my Wizard Mastercard in Narita Arrivals back in January.

I withdrew ¥21000 from a Citibank ATM at NRT T2 arrivals on the 23rd February using my 28° with no issues.

FWIW, that ¥21K cost me AUD254.06, which according to XE - Credit Card Charges Calculator had an inbuilt commission of minus 73¢.

Has anyone recently had problems with slow posting to their 28 degrees account? I haven't had anything show up in the past 12 days, although there have been plenty of transactions.

Perhaps they use NAB's computers ;)

My cash withdrawal in the UK posted within 24 hours. :)

My balance is updating.. but the list of transactions hasn't for quite a few days now.

Yeah - just got my statement and the same seems to have happened.

Mine are now showing, hooray!

At least my trip next week I won't need to use it, as I'll be needing AUD anyway ;) I will need it for Norway in a few days though!

Thanks AFF for the great discussion board.

I applied for a 28° Mastercard on the 17th approved online and received it in the post today, 3 days later. customer were very easy to deal with when activating it.

The account no came with the documentation.

I can't wait to stop paying the international transaction fees.

This card got a good mention in yesterday's paper (Herald Sun) - with one major misleading generalisation.

... The best travel plastic I've come across is the 28 Degrees MasterCard. it has no international transaction foee, no currency conversion fees, and no annual fee. Just don't make a cash advance - they'll hit you with 20.24 percent. ...
This is a major generalisation as the 20.24 percent can easily be avoided by simply having your account in credit before withdrawing. If you withdraw more than you have in credit, simply BPay before 6pm on the same day at least the amount as the withdrawal.

But not something we'll admit to, to them! :)

On another note, be careful in Norway. A lot of places don't accept non-Norwegian cards at all. In other words, you MUST withdraw cash and spend it that way rather than relying on just putting things on card. I thought it quite odd, for such an advanced place.

But if you are withdrawing your own money, it's not a cash advance.

Exactly. Also, if you deposit cash into the credit card, your purchase would also use your own cash, instead of the credit limit. So I always take two cards with me, NAB Gold Visa debit for cash and 28 Degree for purchase.

Relooking at the article, methinks there was an additional agenda.
  1. They were not going to recommend putting the thing into credit (That may be against the T&C's), and
  2. Immediately after that advice was info on how to get cash overseas - two banks were mentioned, both with significant arbitrage on their exchange rates - I'm thinking there be some fiduciary relationship between the publisher and those banks.

Hi there, I have had the card for years but not actually used overseas...great for ONLINE shopping!

NOW:

Family member just got the card and is asking:

1. How do you pay (Put money on the card) by BPAY?
Where is the BSB BPAY number to enter?

Edit: Rang Customer service and given reference number and informed international traveller.

2. Just to confirm Maestro ATM overseas.
$5000 credit limit on card
Put $6000 on card by BPAY or PAYANYONE?
Gives you $1000 CASH to withdraw from ATM fee FREE!

3. AMERICA, ABI Dhabi, BANGKOK and ENGLAND any particular ATMS to use?

4. Can they do a dummy run in Australia ATM Maestro and see the cash come out?

5. When overseas and $5000 credit limit with $6000 CASH on the card and pay for meal in restaurant, does the money come from $5000 credit limit or $6000 cash?

Quick answer would be appreciated!

1. The BPay biller code is mentioned up thread.

2. No, in that that case, there would be up to AU$11000 value available. Up to AU$5000 in value can be withdrawn before any issues and AU$6000 before paying any interest.

3. No issues at most ATM's (other than in Japan - even then managed to get money); some ATM's will advise you if there is a small ATM Owner fee for the withdrawal before you give the go-ahead.

4. Not a problem - I believe if you use a Westpac ATM on Oz there is no "owner" fee charged.

5. It comes from you $11000 available credit - see 2.

And on cash Withdrawal Limits, See post #470

$5000 credit limit on card

Gives you $1000 CASH to withdraw from ATM fee FREE!

BPAY: Biller Code is 150615, Ref is your account number (should be on your acceptance letter) or your card number will work but is apparently a bit slower.

You only need tp put $1000 on the card to have $1000 credit. You can then withdraw up to $1000 interest free. If you put it into credit by $6000 they'll almost certainly cancel the card (see comments back in this thread). The $5000 credit limit only impacts on how much you can withdraw, up to $5000 in a month, even if you put more money on it.

When overseas and $5000 credit limit with $6000 CASH on the card and pay for meal in restaurant, does the money come from $5000 credit limit or $6000 cash?

It will come off the credit amount first, you would have to spend $6000 before paying any interest. However, refer to the note above.

3. AMERICA, ABI Dhabi, BANGKOK and ENGLAND any particular ATMS to use?

I can confirm from experience that in England there is no fee if you use a Barclay's Bank ATM. (Every town has one or more - very common.) :)
