28° Mastercard Cash Advances while overseas [No more free cash advances from 1/1/14]

I rang 28 Degrees again today as my card was posted on the 23rd November but has not arrived yet. I was told it should arrive by the 7th (yesterday) and if it did not arrive that they could Express Post it to me.

Today (the 8th) they said it was too late to Express Post the card as I leave before the post on 15th December. But they said that the orange card will be active until December 31st if I don't receive and activate the blue one beforehand. And that the supervisor would keep an eye on my account and if the blue one has not been activated, she will reactivate the orange one on January 1st until I get back.

I suppose that that is a satisfactory solution. Apparently there are a number of people in a similar situation to mine.

Why are so many people frustrating to wait for this card? The card has no forex fee nor atm fees which is great for overseas travllers, but NAB gold debit card also has this kinda of features as well plus free travel insurance.

I just used NAB card to book accom in NZ and the exchange rate is really good, offical is 1:1.3 and I got 1:1.29 on my card, obviously no forex conversion fee. It is also very easy to manage the funds as I can transfer through internet banking just within 2 sec not like 28 degree card as I have to bpay and wait for another day.

I would imagine because not everyone would have $5k going into their account every month to make it fee free.

My card arrived while I was overseas on a 4 week trip. Sometime during the trip the old card was deactivated, and of course I had no idea why, so I had to use an old Amex. Bit of a pain.

Was very strange not to be using my orange Wizard while overseas - I have mentally trained myself to only use that card when outside of Australia!!

My wife's card arrived today - she's an additional cardholder on my account.
Mine hasn't arrived yet ... if it doesn't turn up on Monday, we'll be going without it.

At least we have one, I guess.

Mat,
I don't know how these work, but I was just wondering if your primary card has to be activated before the supplimentary card can work overseas?

You don't really have to get $5K income every month, you can move the money in and out from another account as long as bring the total deposit up to $5k.

Is that worth the trouble?

It's simply a small hiatus for a few people caught up in the transfer; normally everything work fine.

Similar situations could happen with NAB. (I am glad I was not a customer of theirs early this month.)

Got my new card as well today. Perfect timing for my trip to Asia end of next week. Now just need to do usual testing of adding money into the account and do cash withdrawal ...

Just received mine today and head overseas on Friday night.

I'll be using it in Hong Kong, Singapore, and potentially also the UK, France, Belgium and Italy. Anyone have tips in terms of avoiding the foreign ATM fees that might apply?

I haven't come across ATM fees in SIN, UK, France, Belgium or Italy in my usage of the card.

(Note some of the other vids on youtube attack the RFID loop - this one doesn't and probably means your card won't be accepted in Europe!)

Your card is effectively useless if you do this. UK and France are all CHIP and PIN compulsory, so no chip, no transaction. (unless your card is not chipped in the first place)

My new Coles Source Mastercard has a chip and I have noticed recently that I can't swipe the card at Coles stores any longer,I actually have to insert the chip end of the card into the EFTPOS machine and key in the pin or sign so if the chip was drilled it would probably mean that I couldn't use the card at Coles stores and I'm sure plenty of other retailers will be changing their machines as well.
I think that there may be legal issues about tampering with a card too.

What about Amex cards? They don't have chips or PINs (unless the new ones do, I dunno)

Nope not in Australia (although all Amex's in the UK are chippd including Centurion)

My local Woolworths self-check-out supervisor now knows to come and wait for me as I sign the register (thanks to Hopskotch promotion)

Not true. I use my current Wizard card (which has no chip) constantly here in the UK without issues. It is swiped/signed, occasionally swiped/pin entered.

Also this is a Mastercard not Visa...

This is because your card is not chipped. If your card is chipped, you swipe it, terminal will ask you to insert card instead (already happening in Australia). If you cannot insert the card, terminal cannot process it.

Also this is a Mastercard not Visa...

Don't worry, MasterCard has to follow, because Visa is enforcing chip and PIN on all EFTPOS & ATM (yes, ATM as well) terminals, EFTPOS (savings and cheque accounts on ATM cards) also enforcing chip and PIN, MasterCard will follow, as Visa + MasterCard + EFTPOS effectively share the same infrastructure.

That's correct and I don't disagree with that, just the way you had it worded it sounded like you were implying if your card doesn't have a chip you can't use it ;)
