Most GE cards have these additional, optional insurance features. They are indeed optional. From the PDS:

So what is Shopper’s Protection?

Shopper’s Protection is an optional credit card insurance
that will help you meet your repayment obligations if you

die, lose your job unexpectedly or become unfit for work.


It also provides extra shopping protection for purchases
made using your 28 Degrees MasterCard, including cover
for loss or damage to your purchases and reimbursing the
difference if your purchase goes on sale at a reduced price.
 
This seems to be a default feature of the card and I have not found anywhere that this can be turned off.

So all you overseas travellers beware that even though there is no withdrawal fees you get hit by this 0.5% shopper protection fee on your closing balance.
Interesting that it is a feature by default. I carry a sizeable balance from month to month and I am not giving them extra money for the privilege.

Why are financial institutions able to get away with deception so easily? I don't believe I would have read all the fine print. Introduce a feature to a product and then it is up to the customer to opt out of the feature. Just like life insurance on superannuation....

I read the PDS again and you are correct. The "Shopper's Insurance" can be canceled (page 16) but you need to call them up and do. It's on by default. :shock:

Really? I thought it was an option and had to be actively enabled.

Yes it seems you are right. I just called them and there is no insurance on my account. The PDS was written as if this was a default. Maybe not for me as I opted out previously when I had Wizard card. For new card holders I recommend to check!

This is correct. If you want the Shopper's Protection insurance, you have to call up to apply (see p10 of pamphlet); the default is "no insurance" as it should be....wasted 10 minutes on the phone sorting this out so am posting this here to save others their valuable time!;)

I think the line in the PDS that says "Automatically debited to your account" is what is confusing,it's obviously supposed to be a way of advising people that they don't have to make a seperate payment for the insurance option but it could make some people think that it is a default situation and not an option.
I have a Myer Visa card as well as the 28 Degree card which I applied for last week,the Visa also has the insurance option but you get a letter with the visa card which makes it very clear that it's only an optional feature and that you have to actually ask for it.

We received the new cards for my husbands account today. Hope mine arrive tomorrow. At least We aren't travelling till January.
 
I called up to GE this morning to activate my card. The guy over the phone intended to go through the shoppers' insurance with me. I just told him straight I don't need it. Since you need to call up to activate the card, you may as well tell them if you are taking up the insurance
 
+1's cards arrived today and so did our son's.
Just waiting for mine now.
 
Good to hear the new ones are on their way - my Wizard has developed a rather large split in it somehow.

Maybe overuse :p
 
My wife's card arrived today - she's an additional cardholder on my account.
Mine hasn't arrived yet ... if it doesn't turn up on Monday, we'll be going without it.

At least we have one, I guess.
 
Ok. Got both primary and supplementary cards. The card numbers is the same as the old Wizard (I had the Wizard chip) card, except different expiration date. Is this what other people are getting as well?
 
Same card no.
Different expiry (Jul-15)
Different CCV

Also had a very good experience with their fraud detection yesterday.
Booked a Jetstar Asia and Tiger Asia flight within 30min. Miskeyed the CCV on the 2nd booking, ok on a retry.
Received a call within 2 min of the second booking confirming that I had my card and was making the booking.
 
Got my card yesterday, letter was dated 16th November. That's some slow post ...
 
Yes the new card has the same number although the expiry date and CCV have changed.

ATM pin remains the same.
